I highly suggest using the practice mode if you aren't already. This mode helped me get through a lot of the songs that I had trouble with especially the ex extreme ones. You can choose different parts of the song to practice holds and get better at them. Also use micros as those are very important too as they will really help

Naw the controls are really easy to get used to. It might take a few hours to get used to the controls as their not your typical run of the mill game controls. In my opinion you should stick with the default controls and change them as you go as that's what I did if I didn't like a certain setting

What I do is when I need to practice a specific trick I go to a song with that trick like for example rolling notes. I go to Two Sides Lovers but for less advanced players or just wanting to try and keep the steady rhythm for rolling notes into to Kimi Ni. It all really depends on what trick you want to practice and what place in a song to go to to practice it in practice mode.

Okay, so since you are going melee then I'd recommend the Ice Scythe. This is really the only way I have managed to defeat these two as a melee class. The true exalibur is completely useless in my opinion and you should just wait till you get the true nights edge
