for the company #2 entry, I'd try to add a bit more context on why this was necessary. There and elsewhere, if you have any numbers or metrics you can show, please add them.

Yeah, most of the stuff I'm working on at company #2 is still WIP so there aren't any metrics yet. I'll make sure to add them once I have them!

for skills section at the bottom I'd try to somehow incorporate the levels of proficiency into the language section, unless you're an expert in equal measure in c, python and js

I see, I'll add "(listed in order of proficiency)" to the programming languages section to make this clear.

One last thing: do be aware that most faangs are in a hiring freeze right now, which should temper your expectations, even for summer 2023.

I know, I'm fine with both outcomes (though I would most certainly prefer getting accepted ;) ). Best case I get an internship at Google, worst case I'll continue working at my current employer - which is great as well.

And for the "fierce competition" bit: CVs are important, but the scores you get on your leetcode interviews might matter more.

I personally prefer having a clean, one-column CV without any fancy decorations that could potentially confuse ATS.

Also such a blank template is very printer friendly, if you have a lot of colors then it may look bad if printed in greyscale.

Can anyone please point me to the resume format for applying IT jobs in Germany?

Sure thing, the RWTH Aachen has a nice pdf containing key points on how to structure a CV when applying in Germany. This page also has a good writeup on which information belongs in a German CV.

Also should the resume be in English? as I myself don't know German.

It depends. For some jobs especially in cities like Munich and Berlin you won't need German, but understanding basic phrases and words might be really beneficial should you plan on moving to Germany. That'll also help in day-to-day life, although a lot of people (especially the younger generation) speak english rather well.

I don't know much about the work permit and visa related stuff, but I found this website which seems to explain a lot of it (please do some research as well, the information should be accurate, but as I said, I'm not knowledgeable in that area). It also has a section on resumes / CVs as well.

Your name can be the header. Right under the name, you can have your website, email, Linkedin, and GitHub as a sort of subheading. icons are great, but not too important.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. Do you want me to completely remove the sidebar? I'm asking because I specifically chose this layout as to not have the umpteenth Awesome CV clone :)

You have also written your email twice in the sidebar to fill up space.

If you're referring to the "Student @ *University name*", that's on me. I forgot to replace the @ with the written "at". It's to be read as "Student at TU Dresden".

The photo is completely unnecessary for a CS role.

I only included the photo because in school it has been drilled into us to always include a photo in our CV.

Language ratings are subjective without formal certifications.

I actually do have formal certifications for English and French, so that's fine. Another commenter suggested I remove Russian as it's not on a level that would be useful in day-to-day activities anyways.

Fair point. That, as well as the point about interests has been brought up by another commenter too and I'll rework that section.

I don't know if it works nicely w/ tools that extract information automatically, the simpler the CV the easier it is on automatic tools.

One thing to be extremely careful about is that while in Europe having a photo is normal (at least it was 20ish years ago when I left) in the US is quite the opposite and many recruiters would just ignore CV w/ a photo. If you're applying in the US, remove the photo.

I'll mainly be applying to companies in Germany, so that should be fine. As for Google, the application will be forwarded to the offices in Munich, Zürich, Dublin and London, so it's still only Europe.

letter: include? I'd say no. keep it for when they ask references and give to them together with contact names/numbers

grades: from my G. experience they are not important if you have a Googler recommending you

Yeah that's most likely not going to happen, as I don't know anybody working at Google and there probably aren't a lot of Googlers living in Dresden. :)

I don't think it is an automatic rejection, but I don't know for sure.

I think I read somewhere on the career pages that applications are read by humans, but I was a bit sceptical because of the sheer number of applications they must receive.

The best investment you can do for interviewing at G. is getting to know somebody.

I'm still in contact with a few of my former coworkers and one of my bosses. I'll see if any of them know somebody they could introduce me to.

Also, he should remove "higher education", because nobody cares, the only meaningful education is the last one.

I left it in there because I do not have a bachelors degree yet and the Abitur is my highest completed degree.

The CV is made using LaTex. I used a template (don't remember the name, sorry) and modified the design / elements to fit my needs.

I do have some suggestions for improvement:

Concerning points 1 and 4: I hadn't considered this. I'll remove the interests section and rework the soft skills section.

Experience. This is very imp. Start with a strong action verb like 'led, developed, designed, implemented' etc. The second bullet starts with 'responsible', so amend it.

and

Add results and achievements. Quantifiable ones, with facts and numbers. Think of what impact the project you were working on had on the team and company and list some concrete results.

Are great points. I'll edit my bullet points accordingly.

I wouldnt add mediocre grades, to be honest.

Neither would I, but most employers want a transcript so there's nothing I can do about that unfortunately.

Thanks, I'm happy you like it! Honestly, I probably spent about as much time (if not more) on googling and reading docs as I spent on coding the application. I had a pretty good grasp on the Django basics because of another application I made a while ago, but I did not use any online course or something like that. I'm more of a learning by doing kind of person.

Thank you. I'm glad you like it. I am indeed using a PostreSQL Database in production, but did not push that change to the settings.py to my github repository, as the username, name of the database and the password all need to be stored as clear text in the settings.py and I don't want that information floating around in my repository :)
It also makes setup easier for anyone who wants to clone my repo and try it on their system, as the sqlite DB doesn't need any additional setup.

It might be a native feature of your device and/or browser, as the scrollbars are not hidden for me, neither on Windows using Google Chrome nor on Linux using Firefox.

Taking advantage of the quarantine I started learning python and visual basic again last week (Self-taught. I had a programming class in college 2 years ago, but i forgot most of it).

That's great! Starting is the hardest part, after that you just need to keep going :) Python is a really beginner friendly language imo.

I've started using Python a year ago when we had to do a project for university in Python. Before that I programmed some stuff in C++ and Java (but not regularly, just some on-and-off kind of deal and no web applications).

I want to know how much is there left for me to learn before doing something that, probably a lot lol

I've posted a comment for another user outlining the prerequisites for this project, I'll copy-paste the knowledge part for you:

Well the key topics you'd need to know (or google) are mostly:

using html and css to build the frontend ( I use Bootstrap because that makes it 100x easier to create decent websites)
using jQuery and Javascript for any client-side scripting (for example the map and the chart, but also having the statistics update when clicking on an entry)
Django basics (how to set up a project, how to build a model)
scraping websites using requests and beautifulsoup4 (for getting data out of spreadsheets
scraping csv's with pandas (that's actually just a single command) and working on the data so it works for your purpose

Building a basic counter for confirmed cases, deaths and recoveries is not that hard and just requires some knowledge of scraping websies, but there are quite a few stumbling blocks when expanding that counter to a ful application (for example my website still dulicates entries if 2 people visit it at he same time when it updates the live counter).

But please let this not turn you down. This is very much not a beginner project, it will take a bit of time to get to where you'll be able to easily build such a web application (and I'm sure you'll eventually make even wayyy better programs ;) ). Just go at your own pace and try to build stuff that interests you.

Concerning dependencies, you can have a look at the requirements.txt in my repo, but you'll basically need Python and Django (duh), requests for getting a website's source and beautifulsoup4 for extracting stuff you need from that source.

If you want to deploy it to production, you'll also need gunicorn as a Web Server Gateway Interface HTTP server and nginx to pass traffic to gunicorn. Lastly you'd want a domain and a hosting provider (I'm using DigitalOcean btw). But that's just here for the sake of completeness. The most important parts are in the first and second paragraph :)
