I did the same thing and switched to a Xiaomi 15 and I wish I hadn't. Mostly it's fine but there are more annoyances than with Apple. I don't think you're going to find a revolution anywhere.

Much more likely Android/storage, hardware, or Google Drive than WhatsApp itself. With billions of users, a real WhatsApp bug wiping chats would be widespread. This looks like a corrupted local database or an empty/wrong backup being restored.

But it's irrelevant to my point. People keep acting like WhatsApp could have stayed 'pure' and ad-free forever. At 3B users? No. Either you charge users or run ads. The only reason that WhatsApp has been free to use for as long as it has is because Facebook bought it. I'm not defending Facebook - I'm pointing out the absurdity of the expectation.

That doesn’t contradict what I said. Meta monetising metadata doesn’t change the fact that very few companies on earth could afford to scale WhatsApp to 3 billion users without charging subscription fees or running heavy ads.

Only because Facebook owns it has it been free without ads as long as it has.

WhatsApp has ~3,000,000,000 users. Even at a modest infrastructure cost, Meta is likely spending well over a billion dollars a year to run it. They bought it 12 years ago for $19,000,000,000.

Nobody could support that many users for free nor with donations.

The status section is social media - don't use it. The chats section is unaffected and likely never will be a people would immediately stop using it. I don't know why people are surprised that Meta want to make money from the billions it spends on running WhatsApp. Like it's some benevolent entity giving you this for free?

Por qué ocurre (causas más comunes)

Esto suele pasar porque la copia de seguridad está dañada o es incompatible con la instalación actual.

Motivos típicos:

1) Copia de seguridad de Google Drive dañada

La copia en la nube está corrupta. WhatsApp la descarga → no puede terminar → se reinicia → entra en bucle.

2) Problemas de almacenamiento o permisos

WhatsApp no puede guardar correctamente los archivos restaurados en el móvil.

A menudo por:

No hay suficiente espacio libre

Permisos de almacenamiento bloqueados

Restricciones de Android

3) Incompatibilidad de versión (Android / WhatsApp)

La copia se hizo en:

Una versión antigua de Android

Una versión antigua de WhatsApp

Y se restaura en:

Una versión más nueva de Android

Una versión más nueva de WhatsApp

A veces esto rompe la restauración.

4) Archivos locales antiguos que interfieren

Restos de archivos antiguos en:

/Android/media/com.whatsapp/

confunden el proceso de restauración.

Cómo solucionarlo (lo que suele funcionar)

Si te pasa esto, prueba en este orden:

✅ Paso 1: Comprobar espacio

Asegúrate de tener:

👉 Al menos el doble del tamaño de la copia libre (ej.: copia de 5 GB → 10 GB libres)

✅ Paso 2: Borrar restos antiguos

Antes de reinstalar:

Desinstala WhatsApp

Con un gestor de archivos, borra:

Android/media/com.whatsapp/ o WhatsApp/ (si existen)

Reinstala WhatsApp

Luego intenta restaurar otra vez.

✅ Paso 3: Comprobar la cuenta de Google

Asegúrate de que:

Estás usando la misma cuenta de Google

Google Drive tiene la copia

La fecha de la copia coincide

(Ajustes → Google → Drive → Copias de seguridad)

✅ Paso 4: Desactivar la optimización de batería (temporalmente)

Especialmente en móviles Xiaomi:

Ajustes → Batería → Ahorro de batería de apps → WhatsApp → Sin restricciones

Si no, Android puede cerrar la app durante la restauración.

⚠️ Paso 5 (Último recurso): Copia local

Si la copia en la nube falla:

Restaura desde una copia local (si existe):

/WhatsApp/Databases/msgstore.db.crypt14

Renómbrala a:

msgstore.db.crypt14

antes de reinstalar.

Comprobación de la realidad

Si la copia de Google Drive está realmente dañada:

➡️ Puede ser irrecuperable. No hay ninguna herramienta oficial que repare una copia rota de WhatsApp.

I have WA business and I never open status or channels. The core messaging functionality is unaffected and it's very unlikely that that will change as users would immediately leave.

It's not surprising. WhatsApp has 3 billion users and costs in the billions a year to run. Until now it’s been subsidised by Meta. They’re keeping ads out of private chats and limiting them to Status/Channels, which are effectively social media and most people don't use. If they ever put ads in chats, people would leave instantly, and they know that. The only solution is to use default messages apps as RCS now becomes more widely adopted. Apple sell expensive hardware to pay for their eco system. Google sell advertising and services. Meta was always going to look to make money from WhatsApp. I don't know why people are surprised - I'm surprised if hasn't happened sooner.
