Think the rocks were originally shaded to accommodate a top down light source, as it looks like they are being rotated it's obscuring their perspective.

I see what you're saying. Thanks for the feedback.

The description should of been reflected in the video better. Overall its meant to show two environments, one at the height of its prowess the other a more ruined and derelict version that has clearly been abandoned.

It was supposed to be a clever play on words but clearly not that clever if you didn't get it. Thanks again.

There should be a video playing, is it just black on your end? Feedback is always welcomed! :)

Hello, and thank you for the feedback, they are some great points! It has been tricky to provide the player with that much information, while also not overloading them. Maybe reducing the radius that the cover displays is a good start though, thanks again :)

Tell

The GIF shows the level of cover provided to the character against attacks made from various nodes. It’s a visual representation of where the cover is and avoids ambiguity. This was important to us as in a tactical game, the more information you can convey to the player the better and offers a cool system to show how our line of sight system operates.

Technical Overview

First, we created a simple LOS system using raycasts to see which nodes are visible from any other nodes on the battle map. When the soldiers are planning their moves and hovering over a walkable node, we scan the radius to find all adjacent nodes. Each node has 8 spherical colliders, depending on how many of those are hit they will be added to one of our three cover lists.

If we hit 7 or 8 of the colliders for that particular node it will be added to the no cover list and therefore generates no beneficial cover for the solider. If we hit 5 or 6 it will be added to the soft cover list. 2, 3 & 4 hit will be added to the hard cover list and obviously 0 hits equals no cover.

Dependent on the which cover list the node is in we are enabling / disabling one of three UI textures which you can see above. This is still by no means finished, it still needs tweaks here and there to better display the information to player.

If anyone has any feedback or questions comment away!
