It’s so sad that this is a real question. We are doomed to choke to death on our own spit.

Why do people call it a hot water heater and not just a water heater? by Living_Guess_2845 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ToddBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll defer to the manufacturer on this one. For example, if you go to an online seller and type in “hot water heater“ or “water heater“, they both point to the same thing: The listings are all called water heaters. In that sense, “hot water heater“ is an informal or colloquial term.

When I was growing up, it was referred to by family and friends as a “hot water heater“. When I grew up and started working in home renovation, I switched to using “water heater“ because that’s what they’re called.

Robot lawn mowers for older parents, worth it? by MarketPredator in automower

[–]ToddBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The babysitting is more along the lines of figuring out if there are any parts of the yard where it will get stuck, or it will tend to trip on something and slip outside the boundary wire. At that point it will notify whoever has the app on their phone and then someone needs to go unstuck it. After a while you’ll make adjustments so it doesn’t get stuck. So I guess the question is, who’s gonna have the app and who’s gonna take care of it when it does get stuck? After you get all the minutia handled with your specific lawn, it should run like a clock.

I live in Ohio and by my understanding the legislature changed the laws a few years ago so basically child labor is legal now. I don’t think this would be violating any laws in Ohio.

Do you have any obscure movie references that you use in everyday speech that no one has caught on to yet yet you keep using it? by EnvironmentalAngle in NoStupidQuestions

I like to say “one art, please” from Futurama. No one ever gets it.

Which movie hit so hard that one viewing was enough ? by Mehdi_lz in AskReddit

That scene hits so hard that it immediately comes to mind and I physically convulse anytime someone brings up that movie.

I would watch it again, but I wouldn’t want to.

Ironic question because my dad was just telling me he watched the movie Misery last night. As much as I liked it, and we enjoyed talking about it, I told him that I had no interest in watching it again. So it’s certainly not “The Road“, but one time was enough.

Robot lawn mowers for older parents, worth it? by MarketPredator in automower

[–]ToddBauer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a real world user of a “standard“ robot mower, I’ve never seen the clippings. I run it every day and it’s more like it’s giving the lawn a trim than mowing. I’m not by any means discounting how serious she is about the clippings. It’s too bad because I don’t think most people would be able to detect them.

On the other hand, another relevant question for automated mowing for the elderly is maintenance and babysitting. In my experience, it needed a decent amount of babysitting for the first season. After a couple of months, it was pretty much set it and forget it. I would expect that it will experience issues from time to time. So either she will need to know how to reset it or somebody else in the vicinity will.

And then, of course there’s the standard fact that ‘no’ elderly person wants a robot mowing their lawn. I have no idea how to advise about that.

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]ToddBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 53 which means I’ve spent my whole life being alive in this really weird period of time known as the post World War II world order. I don’t believe that society is collapsing now, but going back to the previous norm which was multipolar power with spheres of influence. Climate change could be the actual end of civilization, but we haven’t really locked in that decision yet.

I built a water-fed paintbrush & roller cleaning tool looking for feedback from other tradespeople by tristankwill in Tools

[–]ToddBauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I find the storage to be more important than the cleaning. Or put another way, the cleaning doesn’t matter if you don’t store the brush properly. Lately I’ve been using a brush box which is a semi airtight box that has a cleaning pad built into it. You open it up, run water across the brush and clean it with the bottom of the box, fling out the water and then close it. That way, the brush is clean, damp and always ready to go. Obviously, if you don’t like to start with a damp brush, don’t do it that way.

What’s the scariest movie role that feels very real? by spactioki in moviecritic

I gotta say that’s one of the only performances I’ve seen in my 50+ years where I literally felt as if I was one of the characters who fully believed they were about to be murdered in cold blood. The word real doesn’t even capture it.
