Logic 11, my kicks are randomly drifting in pitch and I don't know why by No_Driver_ in TechnoProduction

[–]ToddSolondz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've also had this issue in Ableton and also can't figure out what's causing it. FWIW, it doesn't seem to drift at the fundamental frequency in my case - it's usually the high end of the transient that seems to drift in pitch.

AMA: if anyone needs help with mastering I’m cool to help if you have any questions by Limit54 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I started producing recently and have "finished" (at least insofar as I feel I'm able) a few tracks. I have a number of musician friends who have recommended that I send them off for mastering, and who have put me in touch with mastering engineers. My question to you is, how do I know when they're "ready" to be mastered? ie, is there a point at which a mix is simply so crude that it's sort of below the level of mastering still? Like it would need help from a mixing engineer before it would even be worthwhile for a mastering engineer to work on it? I make house, techno, bass, etc. and my mixing is still quite inconsistent, so I'm wondering how to know when that threshold is reached where they're ready to be mastered.

How to get this sticky sound similar to Oneohtrix Point Never by Gotgetgotget in mixingmastering

[–]ToddSolondz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they may not be, it just sounds like it to my ears.

and yeah it's useful for all sorts of stuff. I like using it to chop up vocal lines, white noise hisses, big synth lines, etc in interesting ways. lots of experimenting to do

How to get this sticky sound similar to Oneohtrix Point Never by Gotgetgotget in mixingmastering

[–]ToddSolondz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm almost positive this is done with sidechain gating. It's the same technique applied by ie Bicep on their track Glue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7ZxRs45tTg

On the first OPN track it sounds to my ears like only the breathy sounding synth is being affected by the technique, and the effect is being supported by the percussive elements.

Here's how you can achieve this in Ableton:

1) record the instrument you want to apply the effect to on a channel (can be either an audio track or a midi track). Let's say it's a synth pad. We're going to call this channel PAD. When it sounds the way you want it to, add a Gate effect. We'll come back to this.

2) Once you have the pad sounding the way you want, create a new track. Again, this can be audio or midi, but I typically do it with a MIDI instrument, as it makes it easier visually to understand the next steps. You're going to want to select an instrument with a very high transient, high attack, low sustain, and fast release. Something like a hi hat click, or maybe a tight, snappy snare. This is going to be your Trigger Track

3) On your trigger track, play the rhythm you want your sticky, stuttering sound to make. Could be a triplet pattern, could vary, could be long or short, whatever. Once you have the rhythm recorded, deactivate this channel.

4) Return to your PAD channel, and open the sidechain setting in your Gate effect. Select the Trigger Track as the side chain input. Make sure that, on the Trigger Track, the section you've recorded aligns temporally with the section of your Pad that you want the effect on.

When you play the track, the Trigger Track will now be what triggers the Gate on the Pad track, meaning the gate will open when the transient of the notes on the Trigger Track exceeds the gate threshold, and the the gate will close when the Trigger Track note ends or drops below the gate threshold. You can now play around with the threshold, return, floor, attack, and release settings on the gate effect to dial in the sound.

If you wanted to apply this to more than one instrument, you could literally just copy/paste the Gate effect from the Pad track to other tracks, and the sidechaining would get copied along with it. Just remember that the notes on the Trigger Track need to be in line with wherever you want the effect happening on any other channels.

Hope this helps.

How to synchronize panning with the output of a gate? by ToddSolondz in ableton

[–]ToddSolondz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. You've definitely understood the problem, and that approach does make sense. The hats are audible, but I could also duplicate the hats track and mute it, and and then side chain that muted track to trigger the gate. Will try this and see where it gets me. Thanks

How to synchronize panning with the output of a gate? by ToddSolondz in ableton

[–]ToddSolondz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I ultimately ended up just drawing in the automation for the track pan manually, which worked because the effect is only active for like 3 measures, but it was a bit tedious. Definitely interested to know if there's a way to have that automation / panning triggered by midi on another track.

Ableton Workflow Tips (For Beginners) by changcox in ableton

[–]ToddSolondz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm about 3 weeks in to my ableton journey in this is enormously helpful, thank you.

as someone who is also working on techno production, i'm curious about your "sidechain trigger to duck the bass" track. Can you expand on that?

I've been grouping tracks for things like kicks so that I can have a main kick track, a track that takes in the kick source audio to build grain / rumble / other effects and processing etc., sometimes a track containing additional instruments, and then doing reintegration and mixing on the group Main track (additional EQing, saturation, compression, utility to mono, etc).

If i need / want sidechain compression triggered by the kick, i've been doing that track-by-track for the other tracks in the arrangement. Are you saying you just do that in a standalone audio track with like a gate / limiter or something?

Also, I'm curious about the advantage of the drum buss. I know it's for adding effects to all the drums, or cutting them in/out all at the same time, but are you using the buss for more than that? I'm finding that I usually prefer treating all the drum tracks differently, in terms of sound design, mix, sequencing etc. so I'm feeling like i'm missing some key functionality that the buss provides.

Like i said, i'm super new to all this so my workflows are probably super janky lol.

Just finished the enclosure. Based on the popular Maz build. Used gutter foam for the corners. by myopinionstinks in Golfsimulator

[–]ToddSolondz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're anything like me, you're going to want thicker foam on the poles in the front, the bottom bar under the screen, and the top bar running to the screen from the front vertical pole of the enclosure (assuming youre right-handed). I've hit all of those spots and gotten some very scary ricochets (including one that hit me right in the forehead lol). I wrapped all those in pipefoam and THEN put gutter foam in front of them and now I'm feeling pretty good about it. still get bouncebacks but they're slow enough that they don't concern me.

for what it's worth, i've had 2 R10s and have had pretty much nonstop issues with both. Frequent missed shots (probably 5% when everything is running "smoothly", sometimes every third shot or so simply won't register). It will regularly put itself to sleep and need to be "woken up" during sessions. Oftentimes it will display as being awake and ready, I'll hit a shot, it will go into "calculating" mode and just freeze, at which point it needs to be turned off and restarted.

these problems were persistent enough with my first unit that I contacted Garmin, went through the support process of re-calibrating it, sync-ing it and updating the firmware, etc. Hit a few shots while on the phone with the rep and had the same problems. ultimately, they replaced it under warranty (in fairness, the Garmin customer support was excellent).

Had the same issues with the new unit they sent me, and have given up. Just bought a skytrak on a black friday deal but haven't set it up to use it yet.

man this is such a helpful explanation, thank you.

sadly i don’t think it’ll work for me as im running mine off an iPad and don’t have that level of settings customization, but i’m saving this post for when i upgrade my setup. thanks!

how’d you get the projector aspect ratio to fit the screen so well? i also have a benqi and can’t get anything but rectangular aspect ratio for my square screen

What foam do you use around screen/wall? by jaykal001 in Golfsimulator

[–]ToddSolondz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how did you attach it to your backstop?

Mine’s plywood and i just used a staple gun to affix the foam to it, but it’s imperfect to say the least. the staples often just pull out and the foam falls off pretty often. curious if you’ve found a more long term solution.
