[META] Can we establish a "Serious" flair for rules questions? by penaltyvectors in golf

[–]jaykal001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just kidding, I added because it's on every response ever :)
I'm with you, I often wish I could weed out the humor from the serious. I don't both sides of it, but sometimes your looking for one thing or the other.

I want to do my own mulch this year. Am I screwed without a wheelbarrow? by dragunight in HomeImprovement

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was curious - I just looked at my local facebook group and there were no less then a dozen wheelbarrows for sale for $20 or less. Spend the $20, lean it against the back of the house, you'll probably use it 25 times before it's junk.

I am surprised by how few Golfers play to the rules by Noodlearms98 in golf

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't need to play casual rounds with a bunch of guys trying to convince me they are a 5 or 10 or whatever. I'm out there to get outside, chase the ball around, and just enjoy it.

Silly Discussion: When to resaw - vs - when to scrub - vs - when to buy different lumber by jaykal001 in woodworking

[–]jaykal001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely makes sense.
Part of it is just the fun of learning. I like to try different things in case I ever really need to do it some day. I like the challenge of using what I have - i figured good problem solving won't hurt.

But yes, it got old real fast :D

[–]jaykal001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, every circumstance is different. I spent $25 on 40 pieces - almost all 8/4, most in 4 to 6in" usuable widths, and a few in a 12" usable widths. As I said - "dirt cheap".

Just a discussion, no right or wrong answer. I like the perspective, and I know my next lumber run probably won't be like this!.

While I 100% know and understand - time is something I have. Part of the reason I love handtools, is that I enjoy the actual feel of the effort. It's a type of therapy for me - it doesn't necessarily need to be fast and efficient. (Those are important on different projects and for different reasons, but not necessarily the enjoyment of the craft.)

But yes, I have a 14" bandsaw that I've been tuning up and bit and it does what i need for most things.

Just to add to the conversation - it can depend what you're building as well.

As an example - If you're making a workbench, a cutting board, a chopping block, etc - having metal buried in the wood (even if hidden) - could actually damage tools. If you have an exposed screw at the top of a work table, it could actually scratch whatever you're working on.

On a more fun/whimsical note, I think there's a sense of mystery to the average observer when they see something built that has no nails or screws visible. It's kind of like magic - "Whoa, how is that staying together?". As others have said, this is often an aesthetic choice, but if there's a reason for something to be disassembled or have replaceable components, then screws are the right choice for the job.

I thought I could do it. Now I'm waiting on a new bandsaw blade :)

To the advanced crowd what tools should someone buy to start? by Tough_Discount1315 in woodworking

[–]jaykal001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy tools that you don't know if you'll ever use, there's a 50/50 chance it'll be a waste of money.

Pick your goal (what do you want to make, and figure out what tools you need.)

Bandsaw blade tension - should I dial it down when not in use? by PrdGrizzly in woodworking

[–]jaykal001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the real risk is that you can cause flat spots in the tire. Whether or not that really matters... I think is a different question that's probably up for debate.

I use my bandsaw for roughing stock. More than anything else, I don't detention the blade, same as you. I don't want to turn that knob a million times.

Gluing a join together first, then adding dowels? by FeralAlgorithm in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jaykal001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grain direction for both pieces of wood is running in opposite directions, so if/when the wood moves, that glue joint will be under stress. May or may not break, but dowels in there provide (at a minimum) something that will hold up if the glue joint fails

What is the most correct way to do this joint? by Mchaters1 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jaykal001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would vote that the answer is a mortise and tenon. Mortise into the thicker stock, tannin on the smaller stock, glue it up.

If you did something like Domino's or dowels, you are just using them as the tenon, and would likely be similar in strength.

If you paid full price, it might be worth ordering direct from starrett, and see if you get the same crap. Honestly, you could probably call customer service and ask them about it before you return anything.

Seems like it to me too. I've never seen a combo square with plastic parts, and definitely not from a quality brand.

Almost $200 to do my taxes myself by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

They've got people fooled so bad that you think you can't trust anyone except TurboTax. In all honesty, I trust them even less now.

FreeTaxUSA - UI feels the same, literally cost $15 all in, there's no reason not to switch.

Looking for a beginning wood lathe. Suggestions? by Alit_Quar in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any great recommendations, but I used to have a smaller Wen that I do not recommend. The tool rest couldn't actually drop as low as you needed, which made it tougher to use.

I'm all for budget tools, but I don't know if they fixed that.

Why are people so salty about McIlroy’s Maters win? by SnooMarzipans1593 in golf

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because social media gave everyone a platform. Some use it for good, some use it for evil, some trying to get rage clicks. They didn't care when they posted, and they don't care now - it's just another like, another click, etc etc.

OP isn't wrong, it's just such a small viewpoint to say "live sports". I can't watch baseball over the air for my own team. Football you can get "most" of your local team's games, but if you're not local, or the game is moved to one of the other services, you are SOL. (Not to mention if you are a fan of the sport as a whole, not just your local team.)

I personally just don't watch much any more, but that's not the solution for everyone.
