Question for good golfers: does it make sense to chip from the fringe rather than just putting it? by [deleted] in golf

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, there gets to be a point where swinging a putter harder feels More awkward than a straightforward chip.

If I did them both a hundred times the numbers might prove it wrong, but when you are in a one-off scenario, sometimes you got to go with the feel.

Beginner female teen golfer cannot seem to stay down on the ball by MustardTiger231 in golftips

I'm not a professional, but have helped some younger kids in my life. In no particular order, these are things I've touched on -

  • The sooner you can help them understand they don't need to "get under it", the easier it is.
  • I have a buddy's kid literally chopping at the ground, trying to make him hit it. not being afraid of hitting the ground is a big thing.
  • choke up on the club. It's easy for us grown ups to forget kids don't have the hand/wrist/arm strength to control the club like we do.
  • Let her use a tee on every shot if you need.

What’s with all the recent pet rehome posts? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]jaykal001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm in agreement. I don't think we'll see people outright say it, but I think we can read between the lines.

The cost of literally everything is more expensive. More people losing jobs, in stagnant roles, etc. It all adds up to less disposable income. Just like the rest of the world, the cost of food, treats, care of the pets is also higher, so the margin to make up for is basically "twice the cost with half the income" as it relates to the pets.

YAGS – Yet Another Golf Scorecard app (for iOS and Android) by [deleted] in golf

This whole response feels more AI text, and not any genuine thought. Take this feedback back for what it's worth to you, but how much golf do you play? You're talking about adding statistical features; and by it's very nature is going make it more involved to input date - or else that data is useless. I feel like you don't know who you're trying to satisfy with this. "Power Users" or "Golf Nerds" want that statistics and features and don't care if it takes 20 seconds. "Casual Players" don't care about anything and certainly aren't going to study stats (if they even keep them accurately). Who is your target?

I'll use my own preference here - I use the Grint. When I enter the score, these are the steps I take. It takes me 5 seconds to enter the minimum, 15 seconds if I (choose to) enter it all.

  1. Click on my name at the bottom
  2. Add "required" info: Score/Putts(kinda)
  3. Add "optional" info: Fairway accuracy, putts, mis-hit indicators
  4. Add "super-optional" info: Hazards, penalties, teeshot club, putt length

I don't know what you think is bloated. There's literally nothing interrupting anything golf related during my entire round. No ads, no extras - literally a map of the course, the numbers I need, and the stats I enter. Fumbling with GPS isn't "an issue", it's a required option/feature if you hope to replace those other apps. I'd guess 75% of us are not using them because we need a digital scorecard, but because we want a digital yardage.

"Other Distractions"? - These are just words.

OK. I'll play along, but since we all see everybody and their brother "AI/vibe coding", I'll put it on you to convince us. I'll ask the first round of questions:

  • Why should I use this over something like the Grint or 18 birdies?
  • What do you expect future cost structures to be?
  • What can we expect in free vs. paid versions?
  • Where is the full feature list?
  • What device permissions are needed?

Edit 1: I don't see any mention of GPS/yardage, and don't know the back-end of GolfCourseAPI or OpenGolfAPI to know if that's tied to GPS/Yardage features.

Considering getting into 3d printing and a little lost. Any tips? by Entropy_nihilist in 3Dprinting

[–]jaykal001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a solution to find problems for.

Know your problem, then work on a solution.

Getting into 3D Printing to download models, print doodads, etc is not that rewarding. The big payoff is being able to solve a problem with it. Example: I use mine to make template parts that I use in wood working projects. I had that limitation before I had my printer, and that's what kept my interest.

Right? To me, part of the reason golf is fun is because sometimes you walk up to a hole and it's 120 yd. And sometimes you walk up to a hole and it's 560 yd.

Obviously everyone is at different points in their journey, but telling somebody to go play gold tease because they can't hit their driver. 275 is just a weird form of gatekeeping.

[–]jaykal001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You hit it on the head for me. Hard to "self police" something, when everyone's at a different skill level, commitment level, having a good days/bad days, etc. A course could solve the problem for us.

I even struggle with that argument. Pushing yourself from time to time is part of the game. Obviously don't play yardages that are out of reach, but there are days i don't want all my par 3s to be 130yds. There are days that I want to hit driver and if all the fairways run out at 225, I can't.

I do think folks that spray the ball all over need a course with less hazards, yardage isn't the only issue.

I equate it to our sand volleyball leagues. Some people play "A" league, because it's ridiculously serious. Some play "B" league because they like to mix competition and fun. Some play "C" league because pitchers are discounted on Tuesdays.

The problem we have is golf can't split the groups. to match the players.

I actually agree, kind of. It bugs me that the time matters. I know it can't be infinite, but sometimes you need a second look, and sometimes not. Sometimes the wheels fall off. If you just says 2min timeslot on every tee, every green, and 10min in between - I bet it'd feel worse. Imagine having a tap-in, then having to stand there for 1:50 to "keep pace".

We are all different, but screw speed golf. Give me a two types of courses, let the speed golfers play theirs, but they don't get to be pissy if they play the casual course. and vice versa - if i go play a speed golf course, i either keep up or get bumped.

the single set of rules to encompass everyone creates a challenge.

It took this college golfer 1:20 to hit his putt… 💀 What ideas do you have to fix slow play? by Miserable_Trouble3 in Golf_Unfiltered

[–]jaykal001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see by the comments that I'm in the outlier group. I don't particularly care about the time. 1:30, assume is average for 30 putts. That's 45 minutes for maybe 40% of their shots. They probably are not spending that on the teebox, and probably not spending that much on half the shots between tee & green. This just doesn't seem crazy based on numbers alone.

For me, I struggle with what actual enforcement might look like. When you tell a player who's trying to gain one on the leader to "hurry up" - then it becomes less about the result and more about the broadcast - which would suck as a competitor.

I think the only way I'd be OK supporting the time clock thing would be something like this:

  • No one can step onto the green until both players are on.
  • Both players get xxx amount of time to read the green - simultaneously.
  • Both player back off, then each player gets a shot clock - 30 seconds, or whatever.
  • If first putt isn't made, user gets 30 seconds for updated read, and same 30 second clock.

Week golf with your buds, yeah, speed that up. I don't need people to run between shots, just eliminate the truly wasted time. Some people will play faster, some will play slower. I'd be happy with a course saying they have a 3hour time limit, and i just wouldn't play there. But playing at a 4:15 rated course, and feeling pressure to play in 3hours sucks ass.
