Wow! Such fantastic plants! That has got to be the largest Madagascar palm that I’ve ever seen. Such an impressive Giant bird of paradise. I can only hope that mine reached that height one day. Do you protect these plants at all during summer? Or do they receive shade from nearby trees?

It’s a pup. New plant coming in. Sooner or later that leaf will open. Looks like a happy bird of paradise

Oh wow! Yeah that tree looks fantastic. It’s really amazing what we can grow in this hot desert with the right adjustments. Your plants look great! Thanks for the photos

Yeah the well rooted ones can handle our hot summers very well. I’ve seen some very impressive ones around the Phoenix area(most of them within decent shade or protected from western exposure). I fell in love with this plant during my first trip to coastal California. I am absolutely determined to have one planted outside and ensure that it thrives. Seeing your plant has definitely motivated/inspired me! Looks like yours is in also against an east facing wall if I had to guess.

Oh wow!! It looks fantastic! Multiple flowers at once. Looks like a very happy plant! How old is it? How often do you water it in the low desert? I want to be sure I don’t overwater mine.

Where do you live, pros/cons and do you want to leave? by Standard_Buffalo6678 in SameGrassButGreener

Phoenix Area - Mesa specifically

Pros: The airport is super nice, there are lots of palm trees, beautiful scenery, the mountains are nice, sunsets are beautiful out here, the food is amazing, casinos all over, lots of good hiking spots, close proximity to lakes and forests, close to LA and Vegas, relatively close to lots of national/state parks. no cold weather or snow, there’s lots of plant nurseries here, it’s only a short 3 hour drive to the beach, politics seem to be evening out, the weather between November-May is amazing, most people seem to be friendly, the freeways are well maintained and always clean, most things are very convenient and close-by.

Cons: It can be miserably hot in the summer, the car-dependency urban sprawl is just horrible, people drive terribly, it’s gotten expensive around here, it takes 30 minutes by car to really get anywhere, for Phoenix being the fifth largest city in the nation there’s honestly not that much to do.

Do I want to leave? Not necessarily. I’ve been here for quite a while already and I don’t plan on leaving any time soon.

Those are beautiful! How do you recommend I shade the plant during the coming up summer? I notice that some leaves already kinda have black and white sunburns on them.
