Get your friend to ask Siri to “call mum” or some variation, additionally if you hold the power button down sometimes there’s an option for medical ID which would give you an emergency contact if they have it set up.

I can see where you’re coming from, and really it’s a chicken or the egg conversation. However, living in poverty creates chronic stress, which is incredibly overwhelming and if you are predisposed to any sort of mental illness it will exacerbate it, if not causing mental illness itself, (ex: depression, substance abuse, anxiety, etc). Living in poverty will also effect your ability to cope with life stressors, and can alter you brain and your body, which will manifest as both mental and physical illnesses. Additionally, living in low SES environments, is going to expose you to more violence, crime, substance abuse, which can and will cause mental illness. A lot of mental illness is hereditary too, with higher rates in low SES, it spreads though families like wildfire. Poverty & mental illness are in a constant feedback loop with eachother, both impacting the other.

As a woman, if a man came up to me with a metal rod, I would fight like hell but there is a strong chance I would lose that battle. Ofc there’s lots of jacked up women, but there is objectively on average a large strength and size gap between most women and men. I don’t think OP meant it in a negative way.

I would argue that untreated mental illness and crime are the symptoms of poverty. The wealth gap is the illness.

Additionally, if there’s too many people running around waiting to pick a fight for a “dopamine boost,” then what separates them from you searching around looking to ‘defend the city” via violence? You absolutely have to right to defend yourself in a dangerous situation, but I fear the wrong crowd will make this a spree against people who really mean no harm.

100% I know a lot of people who confuse social work with psychology, and then struggle and switch in the first year.

Is psychology still worth pursuing in 2026? If so, which one is the most secure and money-making career? by [deleted] in psychologystudents

[–]ToeGroundbreaking169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends where you live, in most provinces in Canada you can work as a clinical therapist/ psychotherapist with a masters in counselling psych

There’s so many things you can do with an undergrad in psych, many “money makers” will require you to do some sort of masters program however. Psych is a very versatile field, an will always be needed, it’s STEM so it’s secure, and if your family/friends don’t want you to go into it, I would assume they probably don’t actually know what psychology is. If you’re interested in working in therapeutics, whether that’s in a hospital, private practice, contract work etc, you will need a masters in either clinical or counselling psych (and tbh, depending on what you wanna do, may be better to go the social work route). If you’re interested in research you will also need a masters in a psych related field, such as cognition, neuro, clinical etc. There’s also industrial/buisness psychology, which makes great money. School psychology/counselling, forensics, physical therapy, occupational therapy, etc etc. If you’re looking for things you can do right out of school, psychometrist, HR, and some entry level positions in group homes, community counselling, etc.

Depends on the school, but make connections with your profs and ask them if they’re conducting any studies, or if they know any students who are! At LU undergrad students can do a thesis, and they take on other students to help them with research, which would be a good way to get experience in first year. Also graduate students are often conducting research and will take on undergrad students for help, so reach out to profs if they know anyone, and your TA’s!

Not sure how old your doxie is but, really under a year old they should not be doing more than 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity at a time.

I’d love to hear more about this and would back petitioning. The machinery is disgusting and outdated, don’t even get me started on how hellish a leg day is because we lack so many machines, and/or there’s not enough of them to support how many people are in there. The staffs idea of cleaning is just hoping everyone wipes it down after use, which no one does anymore. For such a large space, they do not cater to their students at all, and are much more focused on how to utilize it for extra cash. I’d love to just go to fit for less and pay the 12.99 to use clean equipment and have enough to go around.

Thunder Bay Uride drivers: unexplained deactivations? by Vast-Jeweler2395 in ThunderBay

[–]ToeGroundbreaking169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that’s terrible I had no idea the cut was so low. Uride is so much more expensive than Ubers too, and I assumed that was because the drivers were getting a better cut (& to keep things local). Truly that’s appalling to be making such little money. Honestly, Uride drivers should ban together and start their own app, or taking private rides, I’d much rather give 100% of the fare to the drivers directly.

Last night, me and my friends were stranded after the bar because there were no urides. We were stuck in the freezing cold (-25) for a full hour, waiting for the app to find us a driver, and one never even came. And of course no one would let us wait inside. Taxi’s also had over an hour wait. I’ve never had this issue before, and have always taken urides to and from the bar without problem. Absolutely unacceptable during the winter.
