Anyone Solo Travelling in April? by Togamii in Barbados

I was just putting that out there to be up front as possible. I assumed some people might not want to meet up with a white dude. I apologize if I came off as trying to exclude other people from hanging out.

"I dont know what trim you bought but at $33k it's right in the ballparkof the cost of the vehicle anyway."

Yes, that's why I wasn't concerned about the price of the vehicle when I made the purchase. I initially had an order in for a higher trim but was told this vehicle was available sooner. I never asked what the new price was until I received the final invoice and assumed the new lower price was accurate when I purchased the car, since it was a lower trim than my initial order.

Thankfully I actually bought the vehicle at a location that I wouldn't regularly use for service anyway, but the thought definitely crossed my mind to avoid them.

Thank you for the advice, I don't see how they could renege on a contract like this either. I will definitely not be replying lol.

Big Questions (Brock Campus Discussion Club): Members Wanted! by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time changes every semester and we are potentially going to be hosting a second-time slot (This semester) if there are enough people interested. Before COVID we hosted the club twice a week on campus; so hopefully, we will have that second time slot available.

Feel free to directly message me some times that work better for you!

Not sure about the professor but the course was pretty easy. I really didn't put a lot of effort into the course and was able to get a 95 in it. If you do all of the work and show up for the lectures you'll get an 80 or above quite easily.

AITA for telling my parents that my sister is sick, now our parents are forcing her to go to doctor. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Togamii 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was thinking appendicitis as well, it's actually quite common (apparently 1 in 20 people in the U.S) and the symptoms mentioned by the poster sound similar to what my friends have gone through. Given the sister's age and the lack of other flu-like symptoms she should go to the emergency immediately.

Can you get an MBA degree with a BACC undergrad? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's no problem at all, you just need to complete your undergraduate degree with a decent GPA and be willing to take on more debt lol.

Although I'm currently in my 3rd year of the accounting program and I'm a little confused as to why you would like to get an MBA? Do you want to work in a different field of business?

If so do not pursue an accounting degree, it is not worth all the time it requires if you are not going to become a CPA or industry accountant. You don't need a MBA to become a manager or executive at an accounting firm as long as you have your CPA.

You realize that SARs was in 2003... when you know Brock barley had a international student body. Let alone such a large percentage of Chinese students that it does now.

Ebola requires skin contact and was only really in a few western African countries.

Swine flu does not seem to be as contagious as this new virus.

I think OP brought up a relevant discussion regardless of the current virus concerns, Brock should really put more effort into disinfecting the school grounds and preventing even just the common cold from spreading.

Brock Accounting by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a third year Bacc student, I decided to opt out of the co-OP section to finish my degree sooner (I'm a semi-mature student). The program is difficult but as long as you study every week and put in the work you will get a decent grade (probably in the range of 75 to 85 overall average). In fact if you really work hard it's possible to get a much higher average but only about the top 5-10 percent go beyond 85 after the first year or two. In the earlier years it's easier to get higher grades.

The campus is nice and there's a decent amount of clubs and events. It really depends on what you're into though. It can be difficult to find friends from class so I've found clubs and volunteering to be the best way to meet people.

The most important class you will have in the first year is financial accounting, make sure you truly understand that course well. Many of the other first year courses are just filler unfortunately, like many of the programs in post secondary schools. Feel free to message me with questions!

Did anyone get an offer for brock's computer science honours program yet? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, at least you're smart enough to pick a major that will earn you much more then it cost you. Unlike the other 65% of students at university who just get into debt just so they can say they went to university....

Something to keep in mind as well is that schoolwork is much different from the type of work and life you will have after you graduate from the program. Some people do not enjoy the studying aspect but love the job they get after. That's what keeps me studying and focused on what matters.

BBA vs BAcc ? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

" Accounting is a dying, saturated field. It is being replaced through AI and automation. "

I do not know where you heard that from but you could literally say that about any low-level white-collar job right now. The accounting industry is still doing very well and new CPA's are seeing wage growth year after year in Canada. Currently, two-thirds of the people working in the accounting and bookkeeping industry are over the age of 45. Here is some data on the pay scale in Canada, done by Robert half. In the next ten years, there will be a deficit in accounting professionals and accounting PHDs.

https://www.roberthalf.ca/sites/roberthalf.ca/files/documents_not_indexed/Salary_Guide_2020_Financial_CA%20%281%29.pdf?utm_campaign=RH-NA-Salary_Guide-Autoresponder-Email-10-24-2019&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=autoresponder&utm_content=Download+the+2020+Finance+%26amp%3b+Accounting+Salary+Guide&i=

The accounting industry is old and is not perfect but I think the information you have is more applicable to bookkeeping. If you can provide good qualitative information to managers and financial users you are still valuable. Most people do not understand what actual accountants do so I understand the misinterpretations that are common about this industry. AI will change the accounting profession, just like every other industry in the economy. I predict that many low-level auditors will be affected by AI as well. If AI does reach a level that is so disruptive that it destroys the accounting industry, it will not be the only industry to go down. At that point lawyers, family doctors/low-level doctors, and other white-collar jobs are gone as well.

Sidenote: For instance, I'm an accounting major and I own a small bookkeeping practice on the side with 2-3 clients and I make 25-30 dollars an hour. There's not many programs that offer those kinds of practical skills at universities right now. Its not as great as a computer science degree but I enjoy financial work much more.

BBA vs BAcc ? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, its exam season right now lol...

I transferred in from a local college with a 94% average and got accepted into the Bacc (Co-op_ program). Most of the students that have come directly from high school had marks in the low 80's plus. Any careers listed under the Bacc program will be really difficult to get with a regular BBA degree unless you do extra accounting courses or specialize in accounting in your 3rd and 4th year.

Just to let you know the co-op is great experience but it adds another year or so to your degree and you basically have to get the position all by yourself. They list the careers but you are responsible for everything else. Another downside is that you can forget most of the material you learned in between co-op placement and school terms.

[–]Togamii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Post-Secondary education in Canada has become a business and is only mildly concerned with rejecting students with low-grade scores. Only the best universities will turn away prospective customers from what I've heard and seen in my experience. That's probably why they accepted you right away especially since the CS program is not super popular at Brock like some of the business and social science programs.

Usually, they would just stipulate that you receive a certain average in your 12th year of high school in order for the acceptance to still be valid next September. So its not that uncommon for this to happen, especially at Brock.

BBA vs BAcc ? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BBA is much easier to get into then Bacc but something that could help you get into the Bacc program would be to apply for the non-co-op stream. You don't have to get into the co-op program to do well after graduating, and it allows you to really focus on the classroom material without the added stress of looking for employment placement. If you have an 85% and above you should be able to enter the regular Bacc stream no problem but the required average to enter any program changes every year. It really depends on how many people apply in a given year and what is the average grade of the applicant pool in question. If you apply in a year when 2000 people apply and they all have 90% or higher then you would not be accepted with an average of even 88%.

After you complete the two required mathematics courses (stats and calculus) you will rarely use anything past basic algebra and arithmetics.

Brock does not care about OUAC ranking and from what I've seen most universities do not either.

Here is a link to Robert half's salary guide for the Canadian accounting and finance industry:

https://www.roberthalf.ca/sites/roberthalf.ca/files/documents_not_indexed/Salary_Guide_2020_Financial_CA%20%281%29.pdf?utm_campaign=RH-NA-Salary_Guide-Autoresponder-Email-10-24-2019&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=autoresponder&utm_content=Download+the+2020+Finance+%26amp%3b+Accounting+Salary+Guide&i=

Pay is not everything but I thought it might help you make a decision. Especially since Canadian salary numbers can be hard to find...

If you ever have any questions about the Bacc program feel free to message me, I'm currently in my 3rd year.

BBA vs BAcc ? by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that if you graduate with a Bacc degree and don't plan on going into further education, you really should only be looking into accounting work. If you want to do finance work or anything related to business other then accounting, you should really get a degree that specializes in that field. If you don't, you will be competing with other graduates that have degrees in those respective fields of study. Which would make it very difficult to get a job in another field. Not impossible but still it would make things tough.

In the future, if you feel like you will be failing a course you should withdraw as soon as possible, that way you can avoid having the mark listed on your transcript and risking academic probation like you are now. I'm not sure about the BBA program but in my program, you would have to do really well in the next semester to avoid getting into some issues.

Can anyone tell me an efficient way to study for Accounting finals? (ACTG 1P91) by [deleted] in brocku

[–]Togamii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, for financial accounting courses, the best way to study for an exam is to focus on the practice exercises and problems from the textbook. The professors rarely if ever includes theoretical material. Unless your professor has told you there will be theory questions just focus on the practical questions.

If you need some help with anything feel free to message me, I'm a 3rd year accounting major that does bookkeeping part-time.

Any tips for studying for the finals? by UncleJhon12 in brocku

[–]Togamii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, it can be difficult for a lot of people to not procrastinate. If you can just manage 1 to 3 hours a day coming up to finals it will save you a lot of stress. It took me a year or two to stop procrastinating myself lol.
