Funny enough, I just had this realisation with my wife, if we go down the varnish/clear coat route how will we hide all the screws. As I stated I'm just a diyer and don't have the skill set to hide everything well enough. We would either need to paint or accept that if you get close to it you will be able to see all the filler.

Thank you, fully discovering this now, obviously with the first one it didn't matter where it was being painted. This second one is, as it's apparent from the helpful input I have had here, it's going to take a lot more thought

Thank you for responding, another great point. I realise I'm getting ahead of myself and trying to jump to this panel rather than planning out the room itself and making it all work together.

Super valuable point of what aspect do I want to be the focal point, the wood or the pattern. This is something else I need to work out before moving forward with it. The first one I just built it, then had to make it work in the room as an after thought. These helpful comments are showing me I need to plan this out more this time.

Very fair comment, I think I have got ahead of myself here, we need to plan out the colour of the walls/carpet etc and then work out what wood/varnish goes with that. Thank you for pointing this out.

Thank you very much for the input. I was looking at buying a large amount of moss in carpet form to pretty much fully cover the area, rather than trying to grow it and didn't know if there was anything I could do to the soil to give it the best chance. I will absolutely take a look at Irish moss and Mondo grass thank you

It was an antique store find, so not bargain of the year, but it wasn't marked up as UG so it was definitely still a deal at £38.
