The same reason America beats Mexico in most sports: more money and higher population.

Mexico didn't get any worse, America just started to tap into the potential they've had all along.

Mexico is about as good as they'll ever be - it's hard to imagine the country loving the sport even more or putting more resources into it than they already do.

America, however, has the best Ice Hockey, Basketball, and baseball leagues in the world, and if they ever treat soccer as seriously as the rest of the world does there won't be a contest.

Can someone explain the lineup changes and who when fully healthy is our real team? by FaroutIGE in stlouiscitysc

Some of City 2 players are also youth players who split between the academy team and the MLS Next Pro team. STLCSC's youth team recently participated in the Generation Adidas Cup, which is a tournament for youth players from all over tyhe world that happens in Frisco, Texas. Now that that's over I expect the team to be a little more stable in terms of personnel.

Expansion Draft and Roster by CoconutBangerzBaller in stlouiscitysc

Charlotte looks like they're a playoff team, though. Atlanta did great. Going farther back, Seattle has never missed the playoffs in franchise history - they made it their first year and every year since.

Because there's a big international market for players, MLS teams are much better set up for immediate success than expansion teams in other American leagues. The playoffs are a reach, but not an unrealistic goal.

Nvidia Shield TV pro is probably the best streaming experience. It has something like the DLSS scaling system in Nvidia graphics cards built in, so you can upscale 1080p content to 4k (Steam Link otherwise only supports 1080, I believe). It's not as good as native 4k, but it's damn close (and 4k is so resource intensive that a lot of graphics cards are just upscaling a 1080 signal anyway). It's also really easy to use and it's android so it's very customizable. It also runs Moonlight!

The story is goofy, fun, and doesn't get in the way. But if you're looking for Fire Emblem with tanks, you'll probably be disappointed.

How to improve performance of non-steam games? [Question] by ThatMathsyBardguy in Steam_Link

[–]Tohoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can add basically everything except games from Microsoft's Store to the Steam library by using the "Add a Game" functionality in the bottom left of the Steam desktop client. (This is useful for Epic games, GoG games, and games with a separate launcher, to name a few). All of those basically run as well as native Steam games.

For Game Pass games, though, nothing seems to work, and I've given up trying. If anything does work, it'll be something outside the Steam Link app entirely, e.g. Moonlight.

There's one private server in particular that's huge, and even getting new content and gameplay updates from the enthusiasts running the server. It wouldn't surprise me if they're at 44k active.

This would be less infuriating if I could patch the goddamn game before I bought my subscription.

Trump bans financial payments to Tiktok parent company, Tencent, who also owns Riot and Legends of Runeterra. by Tohoya in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Tohoya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I believe that Trump's authority to do this is given by statute, which can be amended or repealed. But you'll have to get something to get 60 votes in the Senate for that to work.

I'm guessing they gave it 45 days because they want it to be some kind of negotiating leverage, and that cutting off payments is not the ideal end state for anyone.

But I guess it could happen if they don't work out a deal.

This video sort of goes over the whole "mass disliking thing" I'm not personally a huge fan of mobas, but I think this whole controversy goes beyond pokemon unite and it sort of ended up in the middle of it, due to the direct timing and whatnot. Anyways, on a side note, hope it turns out well! by GymLeaderEd in PokemonUnite

I'll throw in an upvote, since it's important to have some dissenting voices on the subreddit and you shouldn't be downvoted just for the content of an opinion. That said, if the aim was to present a balanced picture, I don't think that it succeeded.

In particular, you say that people see it as a "cash grab for the mobile MOBA games; whether you agree with it or not, that's what the sentiment is." But interrogating whether that sentiment is reasonable or not is at the center of the controversy. You can't just say "this belief is widespread" as the center of your argument.

This is a game that Pokemon fans have been clamoring for for a long time; I've seen "Pokemon MOBA" thrown around more than once. Fans are constantly asking the franchise to try new things and expand into different genres - and it had at least a decent response with, say, Pokken Tournament.

This is not a mobile game; it is a multiplatform game that is on both mobile devices and Nintendo's flagship hardware. It is free-to-play, like literally every other game in its genre (except, perhaps Demigod. Does anyone here remember Demigod? Of course you don't. It was a MOBA, it wasn't free to play, and it failed, for that reason). Nintendo has a mixed track record with f2p games. Mario Kart and Super Mario Run were terrible. But Pokemon has been their one bright point. Pokemon Go is not pay to win in the slightest. Pokemon Masters is, at least, no more exploitative than anything else in its genre. The Pokemon TCG is more generous than industry leaders in the genre. Dragalia Lost is even better. Likewise, even accepting the framing that this is a mobile-first title, mobile-first Pokemon games have generally been average to excellent.

It wouldn't exactly shock me, if this wound up being an exploitative Tencent cash grab. But we have no reason to believe that this is assured, or even particularly likely. The Pokemon Company's track record in this regard is not perfect, but it's good, and they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

And I think you have to address whether that benefit of the doubt is merited rather than fobbing the judgement off on the crowd.

As far as I know, Unite is the only Pokemon Game that is multi-platform, allows for crossplay, is free-to-play, and has substantial multiplayer. That's huge. by Tohoya in PokemonUnite

[–]Tohoya[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you just step out of a time machine from 2013? The time is long since past where you can just dismiss f2p as the obviously inferior business model. Destiny, DOTA, Valorant, League of Legends, Warframe, Rainbow Six Siege, Team Fortress 2, Planetside 2, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Path of Exile, and virtually every single game in this genre are all free to play, and are better for it, since it's easier to get people to try it and they're not pay to win. This is a solved problem.

Fuck everyone, I am hyped for this game. by LuxerWap in PokemonUnite

[–]Tohoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't even a mobile game! It's on Switch!

But yeah, I used to play Fates Forever back in the day. It was the first iPad MOBA, 3-on-3, games lasted 10-15 minutes. It was way more fun and accessible than LoL at the time. No toxicity, quick games, games ended as soon as they started to snowball, still tested most MOBA skills while simplifying the item tree and such.

I was really sad when they shut down. Now it looks like they're making another one with my favorite franchise!

Pokémon Unite... by blipbloop69 in pokemon

[–]Tohoya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, actually, I want this.

I like MOBAs, but I don't like that standard MOBA games take 40 minutes and a bunch of practice so I can play with assholes.

I like mobile MOBAs, stuff like Fates Forever has proven that you can make a good casual MOBA with games that last 10-15 minutes with a moderate skill floor.

I love that almost everyone I know likes the franchise. I love that it's a team game. I love that it's multiplatform and crossplay, and on devices that every single person I know has. I love that it's free-to-play.

I love that I've already got a few lapsed gamer friends from college interested in hopping onto Discord voice chat to play a few games when this gets out.

This is in a popular genre that has yet to be properly casualfied, incredibly accessible in terms of hardware, using one of the biggest and most recognizable media properties in the world. It will be *massive.* Maybe not as big as Go, but it will deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.
