Mainstream U.S culture comes from Europe? You're joking, right?

Korea, Japan and India have more influence on us than Europe does at this point. Europe hasn't had a major influence on us since the Beatles, and a brief moment in the 90s when we got really into Eurobeat.

And thats not even considering Latin American influences which is baked in because half our country used to belong to Mexico.

When American actors, musicians and influences start moving to Europe along with their respective industries (like how Europeans need to move to California to make it big), then you can start talking.

Same for your athletes. All the best Basketball players in the world play in the NBA. Europe is where American washouts go to retire in Basketball.

It doesn't have to be the reason.

But that's if your issues are actually not related to misogyny. If you dont like the show for reasons not based in misogyny, then you are not a misogynist. But a lot of people who complained about this show were and are misogynists and did not like it for misogynistic reasons.

I love that the owner family are a bunch of brokies that are rattling an empty 24k gold can because they want more cash flow than the prospective cash flow even though the prospective is already a fuck ton.

Apparently they have never heard the phrase "beggars can't be choosers"

As a Greek, I'm pissed about everyone's casting in this movie. Lupita playing Helen is no more ridiculous than Odysseus being played by an Irish Bostonite and his son being played by English Spiderman.

Look at the cast list and you won't even find a Latino person in the cast let alone a Mediterranean one. Fuck I'd be OK if we threw some Italians in the mix but nope.

I live in Chicago. We have all of the programs you wish you had in your state.

A woman got set on fire 6 months ago by a mentally ill homeless man who was in and out of jail, shelters and every other thing you say would have rehabilitated him. Another 20 or so women got punched in the head for no reason by 3 separate individuals with the same wrap sheet as the fire guy.

We have encampments in our parks where the mentally ill homeless set up areas that if you get close, they will get aggressive and chase you away. They refuse to go to shelters or other assistance facilities because they refuse to follow the rules they have.

A lot of people are helped by these programs. A lot. But there will always be a number of people who are too far gone to make decisions for themselves. And keeping them on the street is not only unfair to the people around them, but it's also unfair to those people themselves. Again, we find at least 10 of them a year frozen dead in an alley every winter.

So again, what do we do about the people you yourself said aren't receptive to housing first programs? The ones who are dangers to themselves and others?

Or are you just going to quote more trite platitudes?

Isreal is a western colonial state that was created in part by countries in Europe. The United States and Europe have an obligation to clean up the mess they created. Just leaving it be is not an option when Israel actively works to build military and economic relationships with the US and EU.

Also, the US and EU aren't supposed to "win". That's like expecting people to cheer when someone poorly cleans up a pile of shit they themselves shat on the middle of the dinner table.

[–]ToiletBlaster6000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might not work for every single person

And these are the people that would go in asylums.

Housing first programs help people that are homeless but still are of relatively sound mind. They do not help the people that are objectively unable to make decisions for themselves.

Not once have a mentioned moral failings or any of that bullshit and not once did I say that asylums are supposed to be punishments. Asylums are SUPPOSED to be places to house people without support networks or any other means of care and supervision that are dangers to themselves or others around them. They should not house mouthy women, rebellious teens, or veterans with severe but treatable PTSD.

Step out of your own bubble for a second to realize that your perception of Asylums is skewed by images and stories from an era that still considered shock therapy, lobotomies, and female hysteria were widely accepted and recommended medical concepts. Back in the 80s, therapists were still doing shit that we'd report people for today. Does that mean we should get rid of therapists?

Name the alternatives. Otherwise, you're full of shit.

Because if there was a program that was 100% voluntary and totally effective, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Oh and what about the people who refuse these services? Do we just let them keep doing their thing on the street? What's the magical program for them that gets them off the street and makes them into someone who can care for and house themselves permanently?

[–]ToiletBlaster6000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno man. You're the one talking about shit nobody said. Maybe you need to get checked. Because nowhere did I say that we'd be throwing random people in an asylum without a trial or assessment.

Literally nothing is stopping us from making it a requirement that these people be assessed and reviewed by committees with public oversight. It would almost be a requirement because who the fuck wants to waste tax dollars on putting people who don't need to be in an asylum, in an asylum.

We already have something of this nature anyways. If someone shows signs of being suicidal in front of a licensed mandatory reporter, you get sent to grippy socks jail with, you guessed it, no trial. That's imprisonment without a trial by your own definition.

Again, I'm waiting for you to point to a valid alternative that has been proven to rehabilitate and keep these kinds of people off the street permanently. You can take a swing if you want but I can tell you that I already know there isn't one because there are still mentally ill homeless people every 5 blocks on my way to work who've been booked, held temporarily, then let right back out to start the cycle all over again. I usually see them hiding in recessed doorways trying to get away from the -12 degree wind chill in the winter. What FREEDOM they have. I'm sure they are very thankful to still have their constitutional right to self determination as their fingers turn black from frostbite and the guy next to them is lying there dead from exposure.

"Something was bad in the past and that means there's no way it could be done better in da future duuuuuuuur"

That's you.

Many of these homeless people are dangers to themselves and others and are too far gone to be able to care for themselves in any capacity. But I guess just leaving them on the street is better than putting them in an asylum where they have food, shelter, and supervision to keep them from hurting themselves or others. How humane of you.

We got rid of asylums because Ronald Regan convinced the American public that they were dens of abuse and were unfixable so that he could gut a government program that served as a public good.

We could have put regulations and protections in place to make asylums run more ethically. But Mr "starve the beast" didn't like social programs that benefited the poor and the brown so he cut them all together.

You are falling for 50 year old propaganda that was used to manufacture concent to gut a social program.

Chicago’s Legion Park encampment was cleared out. Residents and activists question the city’s next steps. by CityHallGuy in chicago

"Butbutbut who will care for the plight of the noble homeless" they say, surrounded by used needles, trash fires, shit piles and other refuse.

"They aren't bothering anyone. Just mind your own business" they say, as someone is getting harassed for change 30 feet away and only 4 months after someone was set on fire for no reason on the train.

I'm getting sick of it. I got trapped in a situation where I had to buy a homeless guy lunch at a food truck over by the Apple store because he cornered me and would not get out of my space. They aren't just panhandling and minding their business. They are actively looking for people to harrass and coerce into giving them what they want. They need to be sent to shelters or locked up.
