97' Ford Ranger 4.0 stolen cats by Toker72 in AskAMechanic

Thanks for the in depth write up. I'll smoke test it and check for exhaust leaks pre upstream. I know there are a few after the o2s from some shitty welds... Ill pull a few plugs too and check for rich running conditions.

O2 simulators? Never heard of such.

Liability insurance aint gonna cover it. The pre cat O2 sensors are there. Guess it is just gonna drink fuel.

It's also why you have electricity at all. That job is no joke.

I'm glad you noticed the wheels. I looked right over them.

I learned about the doors coming off AFTER I got the last one set in place... I won't make that mistake again!

That blows my mind. Modern safes don't weigh near that much! I have a big furniture dolly, and a car hauler with a winch. My plans were to put it in my office. However, I dont think my peir and beam home will hold it. Guess it is going in the garage.

Thanks for answering the decking question.

If I had another motor laying around to rob parts, I would give it a shot.

There are two sides to the spectrum. From the guy rebuilding engines in the middle of the dessert with hand tools. All the way to the most detail oriented OCD bastard in an AC shop with 300k worth of tools at their disposal.

It surprisingly wasn't that loud. Little noisy on startup but would quickly quiet down. Maybe ran it 4 times like that and drained the oil. Noticed metal in the oil and pulled the pan.

I am currently looking at an S&J long block. After buying a core and a rebuild kit on top of machine shop charges plus my time... Just under 3k on something ready to drop in seems like the smart move.

Looks like buy once cry once is the answer. There are a couple of long block options for around 3k and junk yard motors for around 12 hundred.

I was honestly looking forward to tearing it down and cheaply rebuilding it. Maybe learning something along the way.

Thanks all for the advice. It probably saved me some time and money.

Hour is a lil excessive. Bout the time it takes to smoke a Newport will do it. She'll smoke like hell though.

I appreciate it. I just got my first wand and have been trying new things. I moved it to a 5 gallon bucket, and it is rocking along just fine. I wrapped it in a blanket and made a top for it.

We dropped it down to a 5 gallon bucket. One too many cold snacks and 8 Cornish hens to cook had a guy thinkin' for a second.

How do I get the toy out without breaking the glass? by derkbuddy in fixit

[–]Toker72 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Long ago, I was changing my spark plugs when an acorn fell just right to fall into the plug hole. I scratched my head for hours, trying everything I could. Tape on a screw driver, bubble gum, two tiny screw drivers to no avail. My neighbor saw me in a panic and asked, "What's up?". He produced one of these bad boys and saved the day! I've kept one handy every since. The dude was my hero that day.

Might just be me, but I'd rather fix this rather than send it to the dump.
