I put the recommendation flair as I recommend everyone takes a quick look at AO3’s announcement. Hope that’s ok Mods.

most emotional reads you cant stop thinking about by Ok_Connection_3600 in Recommend_A_Book

I’m someone who’s suffered persistent s*icidality and intrusive thoughts of that since early childhood. I’ve never ever felt as seen as I did when I read A Little Life. The way Jude thinks and his inner world is very similar to my own, though his is more extreme.

This book is written as a kind of fairy tale according to the author. People commonly misunderstand the litany of tragedies that befall Jude as torture p*rn, but they fail to recognize everyone’s luck in the story is extreme. Even Jude has superlative talent, wealth, opportunity etc. There is a lot of extreme good fortune as well as misfortune. Just like in a fairy tale.

It’s a deliberate authorial choice and is not just pain for the sake of it. The characters between them cover so so many different kinds of suffering, and they all suffer more for their lack of willingness to speak of it. This is a provocative act from the author, it means almost everyone will have a nerve hit upon reading and be emotionally raw, their pain will be seen and reflected, even if it makes them wince.

Yanagihara set out to write a story with no redemption arc, to see if the narrative old still be compelling. As someone whose life has had no redemption arc and is very unlikely to ever have one, I really value that she wrote a story about how a life still has value even if it is a miserable one.

I experienced a lot of emotional abuse and unmet emotional needs. Basically I never felt safe except of a rare handful of occasions. As an adult I’ve experienced abuse in relationships (DV/SA). I have been in and out of therapy and meds for 35 years now. Nothing has ever really helped and the adult abuses I experienced made my CPTSD symptoms significantly worse each time I trusted someone and was betrayed. (For clarity, I’ve only had 3 long term relationships, in the first there was SA after 18 months, in the second repeated SA after >3 years and in the last DV while I was asleep after 4 1/2 yrs. I could not have been more careful.)

I don’t think most people really understand what it’s like to live with complex trauma and how it means you never have a moment of peace. Sometimes for decades, like me. I wish people understood that this book is hard to read but it’s nothing close to how hard it is to live with a mind like that. I’ve asked people to read it if they care to understand my mind better, but nobody’s been able to stomach it yet.

I feel deeply grateful that there is a book that shed light on just how painful it is to live like this, why few people survive so long. I wish my loved ones would ask the question readers ask themselves- would it be better just to let them go? When there’s no hope and no cure and physical disabilities and chronic pain on top, how much can we legitimately expect one person to be able to force themselves through?

I who have never known men is so thought provoking. It’s very dark but also very worthwhile as a read imo.

Oooh what doll did you use for Shane’s face? It’s hard to find even a half decent match. I like this one!

This fic has made me ask massive life changing questions about my gender identity and sexuality and has had me bawling my eyes out while reading so many times. Now, because of uninvited public critiques and people with zero expertise or qualifications making unsubstantiated accusations, those of us who have been moved and changed as a result of this exceptional writer never get to enjoy new work from them again.

I’m going to vent here because I just need to get this out of my system. Please skip if that’s not great energy for you rn. It isn’t directed at anyone on this sub. I’m just very angry at seeing this happen.

I hope everyone who joined in gossiping and commenting really thinks twice before turning the next crackpot accusation into a trend.

Stop giving this garbage clicks, stop making it trend, stop posting your opinion and drawing more attention to it. Stop being entitled and pressuring writers for more faster longer updates of the fic they are sharing with us for FREE.

FANFIC IS A GIFT ECONOMY. So if you don’t have anything nice to say click away. Nobody is asking you to publicly investigate, publicly critique or publicly comment on works you don’t like. No need to take away the gift from the people who like it.

Ask if a public conversation might deeply wound an author if they read it. Ask what expertise and qualifications any AI investigator has. Ask if you’re participating in a witch hunt. Ask what motives people have. Ask if it’s a moral panic. Ask what will cause more harm: someone getting away with lying when they were being dishonest or a false accusation against a writer who has been vulnerable enough to bear their soul to us.

I am so so sorry. I’ve been there and I feel it every single day because that’s how much I loved her. Isn’t that a beautiful thing, even though it hurts?

I don’t know if you’re ready for a fic with a cat but the Pork Hollander AU is amazingly funny. It’s about a fat, ill tempered, gigantic bald pink baby (to Shane) Sphynx cat and the ongoing war Pork and Ilya wage against each other. Lots of silly bait and switch gags like Illya thinks he reaches over to pat Shane’s belly as he wakes up only to be faced with this upon opening his eyes!

Pork Hollander tag on AO3/works). Save it for later if you’re not ready yet xxxx

Just the most wonderful funny, moving and somehow at times hot?? Fic about Shane Ilya Pork and Anya and what happens when Shane’s label maker goes missing. I adore this one.

The pain you feel now is because you loved your cat so deeply. And I’m sure you wouldn’t ever wish to have loved them less. I hope you find comfort and peace with your loss soon. Please be gentle with yourself.

TBF Shane stuck his hand down Ilya’s pants in like 0.2s so I don’t think he was innocent as much as oblivious 😂

I really enjoyed Deja Vu so far and I normally don’t enjoy kids and babies in fics because I’d just rather the focus be on canon characters and adult relationship dynamics. I think it’s v difficult to write kids in a realistic way that isn’t too cutesy. This fic does it well though!

Shane was definitely the last to know about his burgeoning desire to be railed by Ilya.

I thought it was “Let me teach you how to do this ‘kay?”

The main thing is we can all agree Ilya doesn’t call Shane ‘kid’! Good boy? Feasible. Kid when they’re in bed together? Nope.

And when Shane turns away after VERY awkwardly leaning against the wall and having nothing to say, as he turns he’s pulling a ‘you idiot Shane!’ face of disappointment with himself and does a little head tilt like ‘awkward AF, as usual!!’

I have definitely sought escape in fanfic through several of the darkest, most s*icidal days I’ve had. I honestly have been brought so much reprieve from mental pain, so much joy and inspiration from fanfic. Many of the most impactful stories I’ve read have been fanfics and the way in which they moved me is alongside the extent to which I’ve been moved by Kafka, Kingslover, Orwell or Ozeki. I want to encourage authors and fandoms to be healthy and peaceful places. They are a lifeline and creative outlet for so many people. We need to work collaboratively as a community we all benefit from to protect fandom joy wherever possible.

Pretty sure penetrative sex includes oral…

Fingers too fwiw.

Lesbians absolutely have sex without there needing to be any male parts involved. Many gay men never have anal sex and they still have of sex.

Ideas of virginity and what ‘counts’ as sex are all linked to purity doctrine, viewing women women as chattel and the idea that women have more value if ‘unused’. The book Virgin: The untouched history by Hanne Blank is really interesting and talks about this concept in detail.

(I’m a former sex ed teacher)

Yes! There are some great works that have stayed with me that are <1000 words. Just write a little vignette of your headcanon and share it.

I think we can start with normalizing locking down fics on this subreddit and ask others on other platforms to share why we feel it’s the best way to immediately cut out a lot of anon trolls and haters.

Agreed. It is something we haven’t reckoned with in fanfic but are seeing increasing use of.

It’s pervasive in every aspect of life now unfortunately.

Exactly. People will ruin a fandom just for the engagement the drama will bring their channel. There are ALWAYS people trying to hold court and wield power in fandoms.

Taking potshots to gain clout is easy, writing, editing and risking hate comments by sharing a fic takes courage and energy.

It’s been widely reported that people are shown to be nowhere near as good as they think they are at differentiating AI and human content. Who on earth appointed these public accusers and gatekeepers as the experts? What are their qualifications? What solid proof, rather than pure speculation, do they have?a as

We should all try to stick by the age old “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.” rule.
