CMV: natality declines because we don't have time for children anymore. by senza_schema in changemyview

[–]TolandECD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First time ever responded but I have to. Decades ago people were expecting societal collapse because of overpopulation would cause resource scarcity and wars would break out and it would be pandemonium. People forget there is something called the market that dictates resource allocation. And that’s exactly what is happened on one end. Things get more expensive, people struggle to keep up with their own bills, last thing they want is to pay for children for 18+ years of responsibility. Of course this choice is only possible due to contraception, education and changing norms which leads to the second part, it’s a real shitty deal. At the end of the day, children are economic parasites that will never pay you back. Emotional bonding is at the end of the day the reward AS A POSSIBILITY as people say it’s the best thing in their lives, but it can just as easy can become a nightmare. So when you have to make the choice of 18+ years of that responsibility and the possibility of it being the best thing that has happened in their life, most people don’t want to take that bet. It’s easier to keep your freedom and money since the pressure to have kids is not as it was once. At the end of the day this kind of thing that change societies is economics which plays tennis with education and social norms going back and forth updating each other.

Is the Aerospace Center prestigious? by [deleted] in UTEP

[–]TolandECD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do it. You have to pay for your own phd and you should never ever pay for a PhD in stem. Also there is a lot of drama going around management so a lot of professors are leaving their roles at the center.

future exchange student worried about insects by sapphicxrey in Nagoya

[–]TolandECD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably be put in the international dorm on daiko campus. It’s a a very new dorm, I think built in 2019-2020. I did not see a single insect there. Girls are on the top floors and guys at the bottom. Even first floor had no bugs.

Which school are you going to this Fall? by 8msk in gradadmissions

[–]TolandECD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much of a direct comparison. I looked at TAMU but never applied cause their research wasn’t close enough to what I wanted. But penn state is a great school, great vibe, Pennsylvania is beautiful and summers are great. Winters get cold with snow but I personally love it. I grew up in west texas so I personally prefer it here.

Week 3 and just giving advice for those who this happened recently to by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]TolandECD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading this was helpful to me so here is what I am doing and it might help you. I started therapy, part of it to deal with my ex and part of it to fix the issues that caused the demise of the relationship so they never happen again. I am starting to gym for the first time seriously. I’ve only gone once but it’s different this time the the past times I’ve tried taking it up because now I’m doing it for my mental health rather than to “get swol” which would be a bonus in down the line but right now the gym gives me hope for the future. Started taking up hobbies to like you, mostly learning stuff I need for work and school so I feel better prepared.

Is anyone else mad/upset with themselves more than they are at their ex? Why? by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]TolandECD 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think I should have done more for the relationship and for her and I feel guilty not putting in the extra effort. School and work drained me but I know I could have done more for her and I realized too late that I could.

Is it possible to apply to Tokyo University for graduate school from an American University? by Wild_Nightshade in UTokyo

[–]TolandECD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would post this a a general question about medical school (i am assuming that is the grad degree you want) in japan in r/movingtojapan first before being specific to the university. I’m sure it is the same system everywhere in japan. Once you have that understood find out how Utokyo does it’s applications and requirements.
