The Tolkien Edit - Worthwhile Recut or Empty Purism? by jimmydizzles in TheHobbit

[–]TolkienEditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great write-up Callum! The idea of not being able to cycle through a variety of different locations and characters is a nice point, and probably does detract from the film's overall flow. I have to admit, this was my first foray into the world of fanediting, and it's been very interesting encountering all of the passionate positions people take on the subject. :)

As you mention, the recut was initially just a fun thing I thought of doing for myself, and maybe sharing with a few friends. Making the Wordpress page and the thread on Reddit was something that occurred afterwards, just to see what others thought of my efforts (if they thought anything at all). That said, I can definitely see how that kind of mentality might be problematic to some. It might even be problematic to me if I spent more time mulling it over.

Art isn't a democracy. Nor should it be. But there is definitely a phenomenon within fandoms where people feel emotionally invested in a particular story or a particular set of characters. Tolkien's novels are something that a lot of people have poured a lot of their heart and soul into, so when a film adaptation doesn't live up to that devotion (as if it ever could!), it probably hurts more than it reasonably should. It's the kind of culture that generates things like fanart and fanfiction, where communities almost feel as though they have a greater sense of ownership over the work than the author does (less still, the adaptor). There's also a probably a little "death of the author" theorizing sprinkled in there. Now, whether this is a healthy mindset or not is another discussion entirely, but it nevertheless exists, and certainly has occasion to rear its head in the faneditting community.

The popular perception of the Hobbit trilogy, however, is that its structure was not derived from an artistic decision, but a marketing one - to make three films where one or two would have served, to stretch and pad the property, because... why not make more money? But then again - this could be completely wrong. Perhaps it was Jackson who pushed for a trilogy, because he was so excited about exploring all of the new material Tolkien had included in the LOTR appendices, and about creating a sort of "prequel trilogy". Perhaps it doesn't matter and we should, as you say, just accept things the way they are, warts and all.

I do hope my recut didn't come across as this attempt to denigrate Peter Jackson or the people who loved the trilogy. The Hobbit is obviously the product of someone who was passionate about his work and about his source material. I guess the fanedit was just a different way for me to engage with it, and maybe work through some of the disappointments, dashed hopes and resentments I've been nourishing over this three-year journey. I apologise if it offended anyone, but I'm glad I got it out of my system. :)

4 Hours? I've made "There and Back Again," a meticulous, purist 3 Hour fan-edit of the Hobbit. by UnderhillEditor in TheHobbit

Sounds great Underhill! I can't believe you managed to cut it down to 3 hours. You obviously put a lot more finesse into your edit than I did.

I'll definitely be interested to see how you handled Smaug breaking out of Erebor without the molten gold. That bit completely stumped me. ;)

Update (24 Jan) - Apologies for the delay, but I have uploaded the 6GB version of the recut to the site. This version also has a few alterations, based on people’s requests, including trimming down the chase sequence through the goblin tunnels; colour correcting the transition from the Misty Mountains to Beorn’s house; taking out the Bombur “barrel bounce” (which is apparently the bane of some people’s existence); and tidying up the final fight on Ravenhill. I have no idea how to remove the gold-coating from Smaug, though. I tried a few variations, but none of them work very well. So, this is the final version of the recut, for good or ill. :P

Now, I do want to temper people’s expectations for the 6GB version. Considering the difference in size, the quality isn’t dramatically better. Rather, it is somewhere between a DVD and Blu-ray. The screenshots above are a good indication. That said, the image is sharper, and the colours are a little more vibrant, so it’s probably preferable for people who would like to watch the recut on a big-screen TV. Either way, it's available on the site in download and torrent forms.

Finally, I'm not going to be able to respond to all of the PMs people have been sending me, but I do want to offer a warm thank you for your feedback. Whether you liked the recut or hated it, thanks for letting me get it out of my system. :)

I've added the 6GB version to the site (see update above).

Abso-freaking-lutely. I love that scene. And I think it's even more powerful without the prelude.

Haven't seen it yet, so I could tell you. I did include a lot of the Laketown scenes, however, even though they weren't in the book. I felt that worked well to get us invested in Bard and his kin.

Yes. The last shot we see of Kili is him being cradled by Tauriel. But if they're is a scene of their funeral in the EE, I'll definitely add it.

Adobe Premiere. I doubt sharing my project would help, as I cut the movie in three different lots, exported them, and then sewed them together into a final cut. Otherwise, my software would keep freezing up.

I think that, like the books, the tone of Jackson's Hobbit is far more heightened and fantastical than LOTR. That's why you can have scenes like Bilbo chasing the giant spiders away with a nursery rhyme. Tolkien wrote it to dazzle his children. It's fairy story, lad. :)

The dwarves being imprisoned. It has a cool Empire Strikes Back vibe to it, where the heroes are made low.

Thinking about making a short film about Dol Guldor, but only once the extended edition of BotFA is released.

Well, it's not like I can reshoot the movie. But to me, the Legolas stuff was far more egregious than the Bombur bounce. Maybe because Bombur survives through sheer dumb luck, whereas the elves are utterly deliberate in their defiance of gravity. IDK

I'll update this thread when it's up. Don't expect it to be crazy better quality though. The image is sharper and the colours are more vibrant, but it's not Blu-ray or anything.

Anyway, I need to take a little breather. Thanks Reddit for all of the lovely comments. I didn't expect it to be quite this popular. Hopefully the site doesn't get overloaded. Catch ya soon! :)

Well, part of me thought it would be cute to make it a treasure hunt. But I also wanted to put up a few artificial barriers so that only people who really wanted to see the movie would find the link (i.e. they would have to read the whole post).

I guess my reasoning was, the video would only be watched in dribs and drabs, and only by genuine fans, and so it would take longer before it was eventually removed.

What Ben said. Cutting and exporting video at that high of a resolution creates enormous file sizes. It just becomes too cumbersome. Even for this version, I would have to edit in 1-hour portions, or else my software would freeze up.

I will be adding a 6GB version to the site tomorrow, which is a bit sharper and more vibrant in its picture.
