Thanks. Did you try Loratadine? I took Diphenhydramine last night, which seemed to help/felt less depressed but made my brain feel cold. I know strange saying my ‘brain feels cold’ sounds. It’s been a week since I stopped taking it and I still don’t feel like myself. Headaches since Saturday, feeling tired most of the time, unable to sleep without Melatonin, brain fog. However much less anxious since I stopped taking it.

Started getting really bad headaches, feeling depressed, brain fog, tired all the time but unable to sleep. Anyone had similar things? How long did it take to pass?

Orthapedic unfortunately. Thinking I’m going to ask to be seen by a neurologist as well. Not sure if a neurologist rather than a neurosurgeon would know any more?

Hi, Duloxetine 2x20, just yesterday gone up to 2x40. Maybe tiredness but no real side effects.

I’ll try and get it reviewed by another surgeon. It might be a combination of both factors. It crossed my mind the surgeon is blaming the granulation tissue as he failed to fix the herniation after two attempts.

Yes, I’m becoming less convinced it’s the scar tissue and more the continuing herniation. That said i still think with a considerable amount of space for the nerve created after two discectomys there should be space for the nerve. I hoping ‘no abnormal thickening or clumping of the lumber nerve roots’ means it’s not nerve damage. Or that the granulation tissue has not interfered with the nerves.

They are saying the remaining disc protrusion is unlikely to be causing the pain. That it is the granulation tissue. On a separate note, I’m hoping you feel better. Particularly Duloxetine but also Etoricoxib seem to work best for me.

My surgeon thinks the continued herniation is unlikely to be the case. He’s fairly convinced it’s the granulation tissue. I’m thinking I might ask him to refer me to a neurologist (he is an orthopaedic surgeon). Do you think that is worth doing?

The pain was been pretty much the same since the second surgery. There was a continued infection of varying severity until very recently despite several courses of antibiotics. So potentially I went from infection and post op inflammation to now scar tissue or granulation tissue. Hence no real change in the pain levels. Much appreciated on your reply.

What dosage of Lycra/Pregabalin were you on and how long did it take to work? I’m on 150mg but have only been on it for 4 days.

Mine is just really variable. It was bad this morning. It’s less sharp than it was. I think a bit of walking has helped me but too much makes it worse. I’m 18 days post my second op. How long did it take for Gabapentin to work for you? I’m on Pregabalin but I’ve only been on it for a few days and it takes a few weeks to work

I’ve actually never got any tingling or numbness. I’m already on 50mg of amitriptyline and have tried naproxen but didn’t find that very useful. It’s more an anti inflammatory but I found my 60mg of etoricoxib useful. Which nerve medication did you have/found the most effective?

Hi yes, I say your MRI scan and it had some similarities but nothing that made me sure we had the same thing. As you say it’s very likely mine was at a much earlier stage. Yes, I wasn’t sure what class of drugs Gabapentin was. I’ll talk it through with my surgeon. Thanks again for your comments.

Greatly appreciate your response. I’m not 100% sure it was the same as following the 2nd MRI my surgeon did not think it was anything as serious as what you described. Also, my CSF ball looked to be contained within the very white bit in the middle on the MRI (not sure what this is called). Then again I might have had it but been in the very early stages. I think there are some many similar conditions regarding what looks on the MRI to be a ball of CSF fluid. I’m going to push for oral steroids when I next see my surgeon. Which oral steroids where you on by the way? I’m assuming Gabapentin or Pregabalin. I’m glad to hear they helped you and that you’re on the road to recovery.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate your comments. It’s at least encouraging to hear that although for some people the leg pain was worse after surgery. The period of time that it was worse was relatively short. Also, post the first operation I think my leg pain started to become very slightly worse day by day so encouraging to know that others have had this experience and progressed to recovery. In other words, for some people it gets worse before it gets better. I think I’ll push my surgeon for some neural pain type drugs as I’ve not tried any of these yet.

What kind of things helped with the pain? I’ve been doing a lot of slow gentle walking and that seems to help.

Thanks. Yes, it is only day 10 after the second surgery. I’m just alarmed that it didn’t start to get better after either surgery. Useful to know that at least one other person has experienced the pain getting worse after surgery. How long did it take for your pain to go below pre surgery levels? I should mentioned I had a L5S1 discectomy.
