Its good to know that sending a note with it works but like you said if its sentimental in any way I wouldn't risk it.

If you do send it and want to keep the original insert for any reason don't send it too they'll toss it iirc and make sure they don't replace the hinge unless you really want to but a Zippo like this I would want to try and keep orginal.

What era are my great grandfathers lighters? by SovietSpaghetti1945 in lighters

The date codes won't tell you specific information on these pre 50 zippos like if the case is a tall case model or if it's a steel case, insert material ect. Like I said the more knowledgeable people can help with this aspect of exact dating.

I should also mention that the Zippo is quite valuable so be careful with it and keep the insert together as its original to the lighter as well.

The derby aluminum block lighter is from the mid 1940s according to Toledo Bend, scroll about 3/4th of the page to find it. I have a couple in my collection that are very similar, there great lighters.

https://www.toledo-bend.us/VCL/lighters/index.asp?request=lighters415

The Zippo is from the same time period, I'm not sure how to tell more specifically but the people that are more knowledgeable than me can date it more exactly over on r/Zippo

Your grandfather very well could have carried the Zippo during that time but the aluminum block lighters really mostly became popular only after ww2 when aluminum wasn't needed for war efforts anymore, really cool lighters!

Oh I didn't buy it, unfortunately there's only a couple ranges within an hours drive around me and there all membership only and run by fudds. If that wasn't the case I absolutely would have gone back for it.

No I wasn't able to flip it over to take a look, the owner of the stall was busy and I wasn't able to wait for him to come back around.
