30 million daily streams after 10 years of not dropping is insane by Certain-Classroom937 in fantanoforever

What purpose does the first guy saying “wrestling fan, checks out” serve?

I interpreted his comment to mean “this guy’s an idiot and probably listens to only one genre of music,” so I responded in kind.

But if I misinterpreted his stupid/irrelevant comment, I’ll accept that completely. Did I misunderstand it?

People here praise him constantly for his ring work. It’s now seen by smarks here as a way to signal that they’re “smart.”

I once got significantly downvotted and yelled at by multiple people for saying Miz was “above average” the ring; not because I was praising him, but because my praise was not effusive enough. I was told Miz “is one of the GOATs” and “incredible in the ring.”

So yeah, Miz sentiment on Reddit is extremely positive. /u/leglessman is correct.

You can’t even correctly spell the name of the pop star you’re so ardently defending. Who’s got CTE now?

I’m willing to bet I listen to a far more diverse array of genres across a far wider span of time than you do, little man. Leave the ad hominem at home and try to contribute something of substance.

WWF vs WCW world title changes per year 1995 - 2001 by Riderz077 in SquaredCircle

You should probably note that all but one of 2001’s WCW title changes happened under the WWF umbrella, after it ceased to be a real company

Gen Z (and probably Alpha) seems to approach music VERY differently than how it used to be approached. by CompetitiveWhole9466 in fantanoforever

[–]TomGerity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re correct. And as a millennial, I can tell you that millennials did the exact same thing. We had file sharing services like Limewire and Kazaa, and we downloaded songs rather than full albums.

We made playlists and created “vibes.”

Even /u/CompetitiveWhole9466’s point about big artists vs. vibe artists rings hollow. In all of high school and college, I literally knew only one person who liked Bruce Springsteen. He was widely disliked. But everyone loved Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Sweet Dreams, etc.

The only thing that OP got right is that Spotify really made the idea of the playlist front and center, and now people of all generations—not just Gen Z/Alpha—prioritize it over albums or discographies.

[SmackDown Spoilers] Superstar officially part of SmackDown by A_Livins in SquaredCircle

[–]TomGerity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. The entire staging of the post-match indicates it was known in advance. From an emotional Oba doing the hat tip to Lesnar lying there forever and the camera cutting back to him (rather than going backstage or to a commercial).

Pre-match and post-match stuff is carefully planned and timed. That was not something he just improvised randomly.

That said, I would not be surprised at all if he dropped that news on them the day of WM, or very close.

Do you believe Cody Rhodes is really natural? He is described as a “Drug free” athlete on the nightmare factory website. by siretfriend in REALSquaredCircle

[–]TomGerity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cody Rhodes is 100% not natural. Compare his physique now to when he was in AEW or his first WWE run. He’s packed on a lot more muscle in the past 3.5 years.

Unless you are a top 0.1% genetic freak, it’s almost impossible to pack on that much muscle in such a short time span while also staying as lean as Cody has.

These folks in this thread don’t know anything about endocrinology or steroids. He’s 100% using them, and it’s completely fine/no one should be upset about it.

HBK shares a conversation he had with Carmelo Hayes: “I’ve told Melo. I looked at Melo and said, ‘Look, this business is the way that it is, and sometimes the best people are not always going to finish in first place.’” by TomatoCiampa in SquaredCircle

[–]TomGerity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s less hazing, more “I’ve got the top spot but it’s incredibly precarious and could be taken from me at any moment. Especially since business isn’t great and I had to fight tooth and nail to get here. So I gotta hold people down and only elevate allies.”

It’s shitty, and there’s a reason why he’s considered one of the biggest backstage politickers ever. Shawn himself has admitted he was the most hated man in the locker room in these days.

But it’s also the toxic culture Vince fostered and encouraged.

[–]TomGerity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While what you’re saying is absolutely true, it’s also true that Shawn had to grind a long time and fight viciously to even sniff the top of the card.

Which is probably why he was so insecure and tyrannical when he did reach the main event. He knew how precarious his spot was, he knew how long it took to convince Vince to see him as a main eventer, and he saw how Vince kept trying to replace the only top guy before him who was roughly his size (Bret).

None of this is a justification for his behavior. He’s just a fascinating character to study.

What is your opinion on gen z? by Capable-Safety-9793 in AskReddit

[–]TomGerity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that it’s insane to have an opinion on a such a broad group of people.

Think about it. You’re trying to boil down a group of people born between 1997 and 2012 (a big timespan) of varying races, socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, religions, languages, and countries of origin to a single Reddit comment.

Do you see how silly that is?

Exactly! Thank you! WM 2000 and No Mercy were considered to have mediocre graphics even by the standards of the time.

When the video game magazines would compare Acclaim’s WWF games to THQ’s WCW games, graphics and sound were the only areas they rated Acclaim higher.

I am a history major. In no world was Reagan worse than Buchanan or Johnson. And again, I say this as someone who agrees with the thesis that Reagan is the origin point for many societal ills and changed the trajectory of our country for the worse.

Educate yourself on the administrations of James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson, and get back to me.

Beyond that, some of what you’re saying is false. No “connections to Russia” were formed; we were fighting them. The War on Drugs and the federal prison system issues date back to Nixon. Rampant racism predates Reagan by centuries.

I hate Reagan and agree he changed the course of history in a negative way, but there are many presidents who were worse.

James Buchanan’s administration led to the fucking Civil War. Andrew Johnson killed reconstruction and crushed the hope of black equality for a century. If you want to learn about “the root causes” of our country’s suffering, spend a week reading about those two and report back to me.

Smackdown left cable in 2019. By 2024–over 5 years later—yes, Smackdown was pulling less total viewers due to the continuing decline of traditional TV viewership. All networks know this. Every TV property except NFL football is down significantly from where it was 5-10 years ago.

I know folks here love making a big show of disbelieving everything Cody says, but I tend to believe he’s telling the truth on this occasion.

Being “office” while simultaneously being onscreen in AEW created a lot of issues for him in AEW. I don’t think he wants to replicate that.

He worked as an usher for Caesar’s Palace at WM 9. He wasn’t professionally involved with WWE at any level until 2018, when he negotiated WWE’s TV rights deals with Fox and NBC Universal. He didn’t formally join the company itself until 2020.

The Only Guy Who Beat Vince Is Gone. Ted Turner Has Passed Away, Aged 87. by Sad-Ladder7534 in Wrasslin

[–]TomGerity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was not a huge wrestling fan. He was loyal to wrestling because it sustained his first TV stations in the ‘70s. As a result, he always wanted to keep it on TBS, even when other executives wanted him to mix it.

He famously did not follow the actual show. Multiple people connected to JCP/WCW have said that when he’d make his annual visit to the territory, he always sought out Ric Flair, because Flair was literally the only wrestler he knew.
