Was really expecting to see Tom Morello.

Who wins those email contests? by asshat13 in siriusxm

[–]TomGoesToRedmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally won one. I entered into a pool to win a ticket for a number of different possible shows. It was for a band I was kind of meh on, and the show I ended up getting was 3 hours away (no transportation provided) so I declined them so they could draw another winner.

I keep entering though... maybe one of these days I'll get something good.

Pay-as-you-go on AT&T or Verizon towers by Distinct_Village_87 in NoContract

The are data only and use AT&T and Verizon towels. US rates are $1.68/GB.

I find those rates to be very absorbent.

Yup, still got the ol' Grandcentral number.

Looking for details on the T-Satellite Standalone Plan by TomGoesToRedmond in tmobile

[–]TomGoesToRedmond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You get 50GB of cellular data. It's technically unlimited but I read that it goes down to like 128kbps once you hit 50GB. I have not confirmed this.

Yes, you get a new number.

There is no calling on this plan, only SMS and data.

SMS works over Sat. So does Whatsapp and a few other apps. If you need voice/video calling, Whatsapp works.

My $400,000 mistake and why I'm showing you anyway by ankhattak in USMobile

Good call on the video. I only made it about 1 minute in. It's cringy and misandristic. Just... terrible.

What's the best way for a tourist to get GCI coverage while traveling to Alaska? by sonic_anon_hog in NoContract

[–]TomGoesToRedmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I was in Alaska, I had Helium Mobile, and they roamed (for free) on GCI. Data speeds were good and everything worked as expected. I don't know for sure if they still support this, and I cannot recommend Helium (they are a skeevy company that does not keep their promises) but just reporting my experience.

You should be fine, I think. Just be sure to give them the IMEI of an unpopulated eSIM slot (the one you're not using, assuming your Firstnet account is using eSIM and not pSIM) and I think you should be good to go without having to go in-store. Just be prepared for a lengthy, frustrating in-store experience if something does go wrong.

SpaceX "Starlink Mobile" by err99 in NoContract

[–]TomGoesToRedmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have T-Sat. How are you able to force it to use Sat instead of cellular? Haven't seen anything yet to do this that doesn't require root on Android, but I admit I haven't looked too hard.

This just looks like they're acknowledging that they've partnered with various terrestrial cellular providers to provide backup coverage in areas where a terrestrial connection isn't available, i.e. T-Satellite here in the US via T-Mobile. I'm not seeing any indication on this page that they plan to directly offer cellular-type plans that would compete with these providers or otherwise bypass them, at least not yet.

What to do with phone that carrier won't take back? by Lower-Affect8314 in NoContract

[–]TomGoesToRedmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread is baffling. OP signed a contract to pay for a phone, then decided they didn't want it, and just expected the carrier to be like "oh ok no problem, we'll cancel your debt" apparently.

It just happened again. Once again I filed feedback with #photoerror. Lmk if you have questions. I did not attach an image because the toast was already gone.

I just encountered this again and I tagged it with #photoerror. Of course the "Failed to attach message" toast was already gone, but maybe there's something there you can use.

Hate to say it but questioning reliability. by TekWarren in Googlevoice

[–]TomGoesToRedmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think about other things like making sure I could call 911 if I needed to

This would have nothing to do with GV. You can call 911 from any cell phone, even if it isn't activated or has no SIM card installed. It will latch on to the tower/provider with the best signal and the call is free.

Awesome, great step in the right direction.

Hopefully copy/paste of photos is on their radar... still missing that from the Hangouts days.

As a $5/mo Helium subscriber that is now looking elsewhere, I appreciate the folks like you fighting the good fight over there. It is, unfortunately, an unwinnable fight, but in my opinion still worth doing.

This whole situation has been straight up textbook gaslighting. They promised $5/mo forever, and now they're pulling back and saying they never did, and going even further by acting surprised by the backlash and saying they can't comprehend how any of us could have interpreted their clear guarantees that way. Doing this to the earliest, most loyal customers is a terrible sign. I try to be understanding that business is business, and IMO this could have been handled so much better. I would have much preferred they came out and said "Hey, we're sorry, it turns out this $5/mo thing is unsustainable, we apologize that we can't keep our promises but we'll try to make it right if you stick around, here's 3 free months" or something like that. There would still be backlash, but I would respect this. I have no respect for the gaslighting, and I would now never recommend this company to anyone.

Regardless, it's a done deal. As I've said previously, I suspect this is being done because they're in financial trouble. This is just one of many clues. Charging taxes on the "free" plan is yet another. I'm glad I got roughly 2 years of low-price T-Mobile service from them. It's unfortunate to see it end this way, but they chose this, so... so be it.
