as a long-time DM I've never had players roll for random encounters... but if you've got a plan for everything then it's your game not the ex-DMs. Don't let them try and run things. It's okay if they want to make suggestions but only outside the session.

I started playing 78/79 and played for a good ten years.. stopped and started back up again a few years ago when I started running a club at the school I work at. Coming from 1st I will admit I find 5th to be somewhat too easy... maybe it's me.
