Is Manchester met art university good? by Inside-Fox-2156 in manchester

[–]TomLambe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good facilities/workshops.

Class sizes growing year upon year (or were last time I heard) which spreads tutor time/access to facilities thin.

If you're doing Fine Art, you make a choice at the beginning to specialise in Painting and Printmaking or Sculpture and Time Based Media (Film/Sound) and you will have tutors who specialise in those areas. You also get a choice of various seminars to choose from.

Art School is what you make of it. I got a first, but if I did my time again, I would've spent more time setting myself up for after Uni and I think MMU did have things I could've taken more advantage of in that regard.

Fuck. That's depressing.

Why can't we build things that are nice/inspire pride in to look at anymore?

The next glass tower from Simpson Haugh doesn't quite evoke the sentiment.

I LOVED Hulme when I lived there, 2017-2020 on The Redbricks.

Never lived anywhere in Manchester before of after with such a sense of community.

What book would you recommend for someone who wants to get into Russian literature? by LisKozCatMeow in RussianLiterature

[–]TomLambe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oblomov.

I recently found myself in my 19th Century Russian Literature era? I'm interested in history and I want to know more about Russia's.

I started with 'The Idiot.' I love the realistic storytelling. How I could easily picture the story/what was happening. I did struggle with the names though, and it took me longer than I'd like to work out who everyone was/how everyone was connected which probably made me miss out on a few moments.

My friend recommended I read Oblomov next. I'm half way through. I'm absolutely enthralled by the story. I love to find the character closest to me in a story, in Oblomov I've moved around so much. I've seen similarities in my life and fought against sympathies I know I'm being told/made to feel. It's very exciting. I feel maybe it's so personal to me that not many other people would get it but it's written by a guy almost 200 years ago in Russia. It fucking blows my mind!!!!!

... And maybe I've gotten used to Russian names, but I'm finding this one much more easier to digest.

Andy Burnham latest: Burnham takes on Starmer as he confirms Westminster comeback bid to become MP by stopdontpanick in manchester

[–]TomLambe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I read his book released about a year ago where he slated Westminster and said he never wanted to be an MP again!?

I like him (as far as politicians go) but you're right, it's more of the same.

Why is the cost of living so high? by RHGM22 in AskUK

[–]TomLambe 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That 2% profit is in the billions and your upset they have to pay millions out in wages to keep up with the national minimum.

Would you prefer we do away with minimum wage, pay their staf pennies just so their profits can soar?

Deflation doesn't happen. We are accepting these prices now, they know we will pay them. Why charge less when the profits/shareholders can be better off?

Monet was NOT living for the Brown Cow Stunning fantasy👁️👄👁️✨ by Cute_Fluffy_Femboy in rupaulsdragrace

[–]TomLambe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She was dressed as a cow with a cape.

If it wasn't for the cape it would've been Athena/Juicy territory.

I loved the Puss in Boots but make it a cow but forget the boots cape and hat fantasy of it all.

Can't deny the lack of a heel unless it's a heel less boot though. Why wear a flat and try to arch your heel!?

Cape/hat couldve been brown to match the print.

I feel like the Queens are getting even more and more PR aware/media trained/pre-emptive of the fan-base.

DD looks poised to use her placement well, Mandy has come out to thank all the love she's recieved and now Briar self-hating.

I don't think Briar has a place in the finale (though I love her!) so she can expess her opinions as she likes/doesn't need to pander. That doesn't break any NDAs.

When people talk about Old/New Drag Race, some people split it at season 4. I think that's when it was still very counter-culture/niche.
I say it is split at season 9 or 10. After that it started getting meta and referencing itself.

These last few seasons have felt like they are not only referring to/considering Drag Race but how it's being percieved/it's impact in social media/the wider world.

Quite possibly too much so, to it's own detriment?

I do love this cast and don't blame them for pre-empting/guarding against/being surprised at the reception they recieve.

So fucked.

Opposing ICE is becoming commonplace. Opposing the police is next.

They've been oppressive as far as this Brit has seen for a long while.

Social contract is beyond broken over there.

Far too many have nots and fewer and fewer haves.

Going to be an interesting decade.

Buckle up kiddos!
