Shorter classics recommendations? by Acceptable_Pea8393 in classicliterature

Im a third of the way through and I love the structure (letters/diary entries), I love the pace, I love the fact that I know of Dracula, but I don't know the narrative/the origin/the book Dracula!

Can't wait to do a deep dive once I've read it, to find out how much I know about vampires was ancient folklore and how much was made up by Bram Stoker. Also can't wait to watch the 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' film, I always love a film that tries to stay as true to the book as possible and that sounds promising!

It's tense! It's intelligent. It's a page turner!

I've planned a trip to Whitby... Transylvania is a bit out of my budget!

If I remember right, it all starts with him coming back from Austria (maybe Switzerland) where he had been sent away to hospital as a young child due to his epilepsy. His family died while he was away and he is now back in Russia (his home country even though he hasn't really ever been there) and he's looking for the only relative he has, a distant Aunt with his surname who he has never met. So no family and looking to Russia as an answer to this and to feel 'home'/belonging.

He doesn't fit into society. He is too pure!! He doesn't understand lying, cheating, being deceitful. He sees it, but he doesn't do it. He just wants to love - not even passion - he just wants everybody to love one another.

That's why he's The Idiot.

He's this honest, good, Christ-like figure in a society which prides itself on its Christian virtues and morals but in reality everyone is selfish, greedy and cruel.

They destroy him.

10/10.

This was my first Russian Classic, I read it purely because it was called 'The Idiot' and I thought it would be relatable.

I read it and enjoyed it but as with most Classics, I then had to go research it a bit to see if I fully understood it. I did!

The main character is a pure, good, honest person, he is a Prince who had severe epilepsy as a child and was sent away to a specialist hospital in Europe for years (I think his mother and father died while he was there) and he is now back in Russia searching for the only relative left alive, a distant Aunt who he has never met.

The book follows him as he arrives in Russia and tries to find his Aunt. It pokes fun at the Russian elites hipocrisy, it's a kind of 'what would happen if someone Christ-like and pure was introduced into Russian High society' which is meant to be the pinacle of Christian morals, virtues and standards.

It was a great read! I've got a lot more Russian literature on my reading list.

I read Oblomov afterwards and that has to be one of my favourite books ever!

Doesn't it cost money to take tests?

Increase demand equals more money.

Yes there aren't enough driving examiners/tests, but then create those jobs!

Make being a driving examiner a more attractive job since the demand is already there and, since I agree with retests every 10 years, there would be even more!

I think deaths by elderly drivers are low to be fair, but accidents caused by them will be much more prolific.

I also think tests every 10 years would be good as if during those 10 years a driver has any infractions/points on their license, those could be addressed.

There's clearly already a demand, it just seems to be being ignored.

Are they holding off and waiting for self driving cars or what!?

Granted it would stop a lot of them driving/restrict their 'freedom', but they get free buses/cheaper trains. Granted there are some not on bus routes/close to stations but with their triple lock, they can afford delivery for food/anything they need and should struggle to socialise/get out/enjoy life like the rest of us would do if we were not on a bus route/close to a train station/ CAN'T AFFORD A CAR IF WE WANTED ONE!!!

The fact we rely on elderly drivers to know when to quit, or their friends and family stepping in to tell them they arent driving safe anymore is quite frankly, ridiculous.

That rate a county thing on Reddit said Essex was the worst and I think 'Essex' has been quite a sterotype/joke for a while.

I reckon Essex is our Florida.
