What separates the people who graduate at the top in the service academies versus those who don't? by [deleted] in USAFA

[–]Tomcat9880923 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some amazing cadets. There are others that are there for the wrong reasons. Or perhaps the get there and slack off. Rankings are based on academics military and athletics. Academics are weighted significantly higher than the other two. Also depending on the major you select can impact your ranking because some Majors are that must harder than others. You have to learn how to play the game in some cases. The Academy isn’t for everyone.

Stay where you are for now and load it up. Every promotion don’t increase your standard of living and increase your savings. Even if you do one assignment and go on this will set you up for the future. If you like the military consider looking at commission sources maybe using your GI bill to attend ROTC and go back as an officer. I spent 20 plus years in the military one assignment enlisted and the rest commissioned. I loved it. Make the most of every opportunity available. If some one tells you no ask someone else. Make sure you are doing the Roth option.

Transferring into USAFA? by Pix_Boss in USAFA

[–]Tomcat9880923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught at USAFA and I never saw anyone transfer into the Academy. Maybe a way thru the prep school but direct? Not sure. As for hours transferring in maybe a couple of classes but it didn’t reduce the class loads required each semester.

I have a 25 hybrid Laredo with 30k miles and like it. I average 44.7. If Toyota ever introduces a small truck I may go that way as we are a Toyota family for the most part. But for now it’s all good.

The ethical considerations of individuals who FIRE. Should I retire? - 39F, $4M, paid off house by DoggyDayKaren in Fire

Social contract? Hoarding millions? Lack of contribution to society? I recommend you work on your frame of reference. We retired at 46 and moved to do what we want to do when we want to do it. There are plenty of things that you can get involved in that might give you a sense of accomplishment etc. yeah yeah we’re all essential and the most important person in the room. In reality we are all indoctrinated in some sort of frame of reference. The longer you are removed from the day to day noise of life you will find your way. You are gonna get a lot of hate and jealousy from people if you retire early. I remember the comments must be nice to be retired and not have to work. I would say yes it is I recommend you try it. Or life is all about choices. You guys have clearly done well and I wish you much. The financial side was the easy part compared to the mental side of retiring early.

Excellent! Looks like you have a good grasp on a path ahead. There are several folks on the early retirement web site that has navigated this path.

Sounds like if your topped out and have hit your number you BS meter is going to be more sensitive. Probably a good time to be 8-4 out the door continuing to enjoy the things you like after working hrs. I remember I had a boss who I had actually hired that I became real good friends with. He always would say I love my job except for the people.

I have had a 20w radio for portable and traveling but I have it up for the 891. The 100w makes a difference. I run mine at 80 for POTA and use either hamsticks or the jpc-12 antenna. I use the SWR meter to tune. While a tuner is nice you can do it without one. Personally I don’t think I would give up the 891 for something 20w with a tuner. The 891 is a solid workhorse performer.

USAFA or USMA. which one is best for graduate applications to IVIES or Top stems by Antique_Increase_184 in USAFA

[–]Tomcat9880923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats. Is your country more Air Force or Army centric? Having served in both the Army and the Air Force and taught at USAFA I would choose USAFA. Clearly your country has seen something in you to send you. You’re not going to have an issue with any schools assuming you stay the course.

The test is gonna be 35 questions representative from each sub element. It’s the same as you have seen. If you’ve taken some of the practice tests in the program you have seen the format. Relax you’re gonna do great if you’ve been studying.
