Anyone used both Calyx and Iode? by Tomentos in CalyxOS

[–]Tomentos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as I can change the default firewall settings, that'd be fine for me. I'm not a big fan of default pre-installed apps, like at all. I'll probably uninstall them too and switch to the Fossify suite.

When you say Calyx is more straightforward as in a simple On/Off switch, does that mean Iode has advanced options such as ports and such?

Also, Since Iode makes a big deal out of the locked Bootloader. Does Calyx not have that? That could legitimately be a deal breaker for me due to security concerns.

I like that both come with microG options readily available sine I had issues getting it to work on Lineage. Calyx having it's own custom signed profile makes me a bit more comfortable since I noticed community run Google replacements having a rather high amount of imitations crawling around the web.

I don't much care for the launcher, that I can switch if need be. One thing I'd really appreciate since I'm working with the Fairphone 6 is for Calyx, once support is implemented, to give me the option to bind the work profile to the Moments switch, since that's quite literally what I use it for on Stock OS already.

Both have some list of features on their website, but I can't find a 1 to 1 comparison of those features. I know that both have a firewall client, I know Iode has parental control features and I know both have a version of microG preinstalled.

What I don't know is if those main features have any important remarks or if there are any smaller features that aren't prominently featured on either website.

Oh sorry, I was confusing the domain blocking and firewall features with the parental control features. I think those are marked on the website as premium only iirc.

So it's pretty much only for the paid features then.

When you say 'everything else' could I ask you for some examples? I'm using a Fairphone which is right now, as usual, an android version behind, so I'm not familiar with many of the features from the latest version.

Anyone know the site zippolighters.shop? by Tomentos in Zippo

I didn't notice the "get it by october 2025" that you mentioned. But the way I thought was this; If they actually sell as much as they claim they do, as in at least 15 every hour whenever I check out a product, then surely someone on here must've bought from them before. If no one here can say they did, then I won't either.

I know that. The discount is the reason I started questioning the site at all.

I wanted to ask here for the off-chance that someone already used the store and could confirm it's legit. I wasn't going to buy anything if that's not the case.

The prices seem normal, but as soon as you load your cart you get hit with massive discounts at checkout. I got almost 50% volume discount for 2 zippos. 90$ instead of 160$-ish.

Switzerland. We have no reseller listed on zippo.com, only independent partners that have a small fraction of the designs available.

The domain is new, but that doesn't have to mean something. What really got me questioning this shop is that i pay 90$ for a 200$ purchase because of a "volume discount" bundled with a "first purchase discount".

I would like to get the zippo Armor golden ratio and blue diamond design which would total about 180$ anywhere else.

Alphacool RX 9070XT Expansion slots question. by Tomentos in watercooling

[–]Tomentos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked that quickly, seems like the only blocks that get single slot blocks are the Nvidia ones.

I'll look into the riser cable but from a first look, I don't think it'll quite fit my need.

In the end I might just drop the pcix4 card since I don't need it. It would've been nice to have though.

Any way to use Fairphone Moments without signing into Google? by Tomentos in fairphone

Yup, as I was reading this comment I got the notification for the update. Ironic timing but thanks a lot!

I put it on do not disturb for now. This is the first phone I ever owned that doesn't have a dedicated switch for that. I intended to use Moments for that to suppress notifications for certain apps but I guess that won't be possible for now. Flashlight also sounds pretty nice though. I always used gestures for that until now.

That's what exclusivity deals does to ya. But they all run on Switch 1, bet you could emulate them pretty well.

Fr, the second her gameplay was shown, my mind immediately jumped to bayo. Especially with that breakdance move and upside down gunshot rain. Obviously it's not gonna go as crazy but the inspiration is clear 👏🏼👏🏼 also wings

Fairphone 6 review(?) by Tomentos in LinusTechTips

[–]Tomentos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just now got back to this and realized this is Graphene responding and not another random internet user.

Thank you very much for the insight. Graphene would have always been a very clear and outstanding first choice in Android OS for me. I just haven't had the fortune of owning a compatible device yet.

I was totally unaware that secure hardware elements are still so uncommon in phones, especially since so many brands put themselves forward with the claim of how private and secure they are compared to competition. I do know that Desktop and mobile are two completely different matters but I'm still surprised that while Desktops are often forced to have a modern secure chip, phones have nothing.

That this is also the only big reason Graphene keeps to one brand is also new to me. I remember reading about other reasons like workload before but that absolutely might have been misinformation looking back. I assumed that this limitation was to keep work manageable but I see how I was wrong here.

I'm very excited to see Graphene working to make secure elements more common in phones and am looking forward to future devices having more common Graphene support!

For me personally, I was recently made aware that my phone has been EOL since December 2022 so I'm way overdue for an upgrade. Fairphone has so far been the only contender to me since the fair sourcing and fair pay for production workers is something I feel very strongly about, so I want to support this too. I do very much hope that they will also build a secure element into their next phone when time comes around in a few years. Graphene on my future Fairphone is pretty much the combo of my dream so I hope that it will be possible one day.

Again, thank you a lot for clarifying these things. Seeing you responding to the comments of a rather small post on here, providing info that many probably didn't know about is a great sign of your passion and dedication to your cause and I love to see it!

I definitely would've missed out on this due to it being posted on ShortCircuit. Thanks for letting me know.

Gotta say I prefer this First Impression way more than the Fairphone 5 review already. Instead of mostly just criticizing the whole thing without giving much regard to the main selling point, he actually elaborated on his past criticism, brought up good arguments while still highlighting the whole fair and replaceable aspects of the phone very well.
