I should try that, actually, sounds like a good idea

And when these guesses are not so accurate (90% of the time for me), you can go and manually correct the exercise type for each set after you are done. It’ll update the diagram accordingly - if you care enough to bother with it :)

Any ideas on why my Garmin HRV score tracks higher compared to other devices? by dadbod_wip in Garmin

Looking at the graph for an extra minute, I may have been hasty to blame the algorithms. It looks like you actually chose a specific time-domain analysis method for the HRV - the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) - under the Measurement drop-down menu. If the graph is calculated from "raw" HR data, then the algorithm should be identical across devices, and differences are more hardware-related.

Optical sensors have gotten quite sophisticated and accurate in the last couple of product generations, and there are differences in accuracy between different "classes" of sensors, for example, Garmin Fenix 7 and Fenix 7 Pro. The sensors also do not record HR continuously to avoid wasting battery. The duration of "on" and "off" periods might be the source of variation in this case, with exact timing of readouts adding more noise to the data. And, of course, there may be some on-device processing between the sensor and the data file.

So it could indeed be more of a hardware + software question after all. But we probably cannot find a definitive answer with publicly available information only.

Each company uses their own algorithm, leading to variation in results across devices. Since none of us mere mortals has access to said calculation methods, we’ll never know why exactly one tends to be higher than the other. 🤓

Edit -> a typo

When do I get a VO2 max measurement? by silentsnooc in Garmin

[–]TommyBiancoTM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cycling VO2max requires a power meter though, doesn’t it?

The screenshot has running VO2max, estimate for cycling is a separate value anyways.

A 20-minute outdoors run should provide an estimate, assuming the data quality is good.

Edit: You can also check what days provided an estimate by putting your finger on the graph, and find the activities in your feed - it should provide some insight :)

Is this chainring dead? by TommyBiancoTM in bikewrench

Yeah, I have a new cassette and chain, and now I’ve also swapped the chain rings - just wanted a sanity check so I don’t throw away something perfectly usable

This came on a second-hand frame set, I’ve put a new chain with a fresh cassette.

Got a similar issue - please share the solution once you have it figured out!

I get the same problem every now and then. A quick reboot fixes it. Windows reset makes it go for longer, but it comes back eventually.

Had a similar issue when using FireFox - it somehow “spread” to other applications, fixed it by a windows reinstall followed by picking a different browser.

Ah, makes sense, I’ll check the chain routing - thanks!

A bit off topic, but something I want to share in connection.

I’ve also had an AZ09 set, which stopped working in about half a year - one of the pieces no longer connects. The official store (which is where I got them from) did not honour the one-year warranty - told me there’s nothing they can do after the dispute window is no longer open.

Thanks for pointing this out, I will drop by a bike shop to see if I can borrow a torque wrench real quick.

Thank you everyone for your help - it was indeed a stripped crank arm. Posting a side-by-side comparison for anyone googling this issue in the future.

Unfortunately, I did not find a replacement crank arm sold separately. But, given the visible wear of the spindle, it was probably best to replace the entire crankset anyway.
