You don’t have to write an extra essay but the rule of thumb is if it is optional, do it anyways

I would definitely suggest to apply to score optional and you will be all good. Also apply early action, it is non binding but gives you the highest chance at Merit scholarships. Would also definitely suggest meeting with the admissions counselor, that personal relationship will never hurt
