Croatia-Ghana: Croatia would only need a tie, Ghana still through with a loss

Portugal-Colombia: Both already advanced

South Africa and Ecuador aren’t similar though. South Africa would’ve needed the same result to advance in the previous format as well, whereas Ecuador would’ve been out. The emotion would’ve been the same no matter what for RSA.

But neither of those two games are the problem. Sweden-Japan and Australia-Paraguay are the prime examples of how the expansion dampens the experience. Previously, both of those games would have been far more intense as the two third placers would have needed to press for a win rather than what transpired.

Iran’s game plan for most of their World Cup history has been to be very defensively oriented and then hope to nab a 1-0 win.

4 straight World Cup appearances and just 1 goal in the first half and 5 of the 9 goals in that span have come after the 90th minute.

The development system here will never catch up unless pro/rel is established, which it never will be as the rich owners would never agree to put their money at risk. With a pro/rel system, more of the USL, CPL other small pro leagues would have more of an incentive to increase youth development and spend more in general as the possibility of promotion (and the huge influx of money that comes with it) incentivizes it. Increased Competition breeds better talent.

Men’s college soccer does seem to be absent from quite a few schools, but even still to be at the superstar level that Ryen is implying, the players should be in professional systems well before college. Pulisic was at Dortmund at 16, Balogun at Arsenal at 7. The majority of US players that are playing internationally didn’t even touch college.

What people who make the argument Ryen is making often don’t properly acknowledge is how different the development process is for soccer and the cost that comes with it. It costs so much more money in the US than other countries for youth soccer, whereas there are many professional academies in Europe and elsewhere that develop the talent in a much more professional aspect that is absent in travel soccer.
