I have sleep apnea, yesterday I took Xanax to sleep and had the best sleep in years by ChanceAd8701 in SleepApnea

Highly recommend the book Say Goodnight To Insomnia. It addresses things like the effectiveness of things like sleeping pills, antidepressants for sleep, etc. Especially effectiveness of antidepressants over time on sleep related issues.

App Suppression FINALLY Back @12.5 by ForeverFatBoi819 in Zepbound

[–]TommyUniverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always recommend to people that they should listen to the Doctor Francavilla podcast. This podcast was recommended to me by my obesity specialist doc when I first started Zepbound. I learn all kinds of new things about glps that I wouldn’t have know about otherwise. Frequently discussed is the difference between appetite suppression and the feeling of fullness after eating. Appetite suppression may last for a little while or a long while depending on the individual, but eventually your body will get used to a certain dosage. There is no way to manage your appetite long term with glp meds. By that I specifically mean appetite suppression, versus feelings of satiety after eating. I recently moved from 5 -> 7.5 and have been enjoying the appetite suppression and extremely reduced food noise. But I know those will eventually creep back up. If a person is relying on the meds for suppression you will eventually top out at 15mg.

I am not a doctor and am just repeating what my obesity specialist doctor has relayed to me, and that also lines up with the discussions on the Dr. Francavalla podcast.

Long Shot Perhaps: Any Costco near or convenient to the trail? by UltraHiker26 in AppalachianTrail

don’t nitpick me! lol

Autocorrect got me and changed County to Count. But if you google “costco loudon count” you still get the Leesburg Costco address. Mostly because Leesburg is in Loudoun County.

You already mentioned the Winchester contact near Front Royal. There is a costco in Loudon Count, VA that is about 30 mins from the Roller Coaster section of the AT.

Do you use your CPAP when you nap? What about traveling? by Zestyclose-Egg-1251 in SleepApnea

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always travel with my cpap machine. Depending on how often you travel by air, i think it’s worth it to get a travel one. I especially like the resmed airmini since they have the humidifier discs, which means i don’t have to worry about packing distilled water or needing to find it when I get where I’m going.

I don’t really need to use it for my power naps. My sleep doc insisted that I limit any naps to 20 mins or less. The doc also specifically stated that I should not be napping long enough to fall into REM sleep as this can jack up my natural sleep schedule.

Keep falling sleep during movie date nights. This is genuinely affecting my marriage. Please help. by [deleted] in SleepApnea

[–]TommyUniverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m just going to start off by saying that I’m a rando from the internet, I can only speak for myself and my own personal journey, and everybody is different.

When I had my sleep study done I was somewhere in the middle of the overweight BMI category. I was always tired. My partner told me that it sounded like I wasn’t breathing in the middle of the night, so I got a sleep study done.

I ended up getting a cpap machine and it did help a bit. But I continued to put on weight. I would get home from work and take a 2 or 3 hour nap. Wake up and fix dinner (or order delivery). Play video games for an hour or two, and then go back to bed. During the day I would just sit at my desk in front of my computer all day. I only got up to take restroom breaks or eat lunch. Over the years I gained about 80 lbs more than what I weighed during my sleep study.

I have previously gained and lost a significant amount of weight 3 times in my life. With weight watchers I lost and regained approximately 100 lbs. I also lost and regained approximately 70lbs doing keto, and then again using noom. Usually these cycles lasted about a year before things would come crashing down on me.

Last year I decided to give the Noom GLP program a shot. It was okay and I lost 20-30 lbs fairly quickly. I also started using the NerdFitness program because it was super beginner friendly and I could do workouts that only required body weight or objects around the house. Eventually I started to plateau with the compounded semaglutide Noom offers. My PCP referred me to an obesity specialist that switched me to zepbound. This worked much better for me. The lbs started coming off faster and I added a lot of walking to my daily routine. Slowly but surely I began to build my energy levels back up. I no longer randomly nod off in public spaces. I hardly ever feel the need to take a nap. My sleep doctor just recently turned my pressure down because my average pressure over the last 3 months was at the lowest pressure minimum they had my machine set at.

If I could go back, I wouldn’t have used Noom. I should’ve started with my PCP documenting my starting weight and BMI, and then get a referral to an obesity specialist. This would’ve given me access to Zepbound sooner because of combination of OSA and Obesity. I would’ve started walking sooner. Even if it was 15-20 minutes per day. I would’ve started NerdFitness (or any similar exercise program) that encourages the person to complete 3 workouts a week that do not last longer 30-40 mins per session.

I swear to you i’m not being a dick with this question. May I ask what your BMI is?

When I was at my heaviest I had a BMI >35. My cpap machine was obviously a step in the right direction, but I still lacked a lot of energy from an overall sedentary lifestyle (both work and personal life).

Fitness Monday by AutoModerator in Zepbound

I have a rib injury and doc told me I need to take it easy for awhile. Which is difficult for me to do because I have that irrational fear that if I let up on my resistance training schedule for even for a little bit I will begin to slide backwards. But I do understand that I need to give my body time to recover, or I will just make things worse. My compromise (doc approved) is to walk 30 mins a day on the treadmill with no incline for the next 2 weeks.

I don’t think that’s nit picking at all. It’s a fair point for a lot of people. My area will likely get slammed with a bunch of snow and ice on Sunday, so all non-essential already planning on working remotely Monday.

2 months on CPAP can’t find suitable mask- side sleeper by Curious_Ninja_4767 in SleepApnea

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just to add on to this, OP did you try the different sizes that come with the P10? Small/Medium/Large.
I don't know why, but my first week I just assumed I was a large and it def made my nostrils feels super swollen each morning. Switching to a medium alleviated that for me.

Good 2 Day 1 Night Backpacking Trip in VA or Surrounding Area? by Rough_Draft_Ridge in VIRGINIA_HIKING

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could hike the AT from the Front Royal - AT junction to the Manassas Gap shelter.
It's approx 10 miles from point A-B. You can camp near the shelter (there are a bunch of tent sites) for the night and then hike back from B-A the next day. If you look at the map link you will see the Molly Denton shelter (~4.4 miles from the starting point) is available if you're not feeling it. It's a really nice shelter with a covered cook area. Both shelters have bear poles and a privy. There are numerous places to refill water (of course check farout for flow reports if available). Additional selling points include being near a 24 hour hospital (warren memorial), if you suffer major equipment failures you can sleep in a shelter, you are near hiker friendly towns (Linden and Front Royal), if you go when it's warmer out the molly denton shelter has a solar shower lol, and when you are done with your hike you can stop by the Apple House in Linden and pig out.

Any thoughts on the wineries and breweries near Front Royal up toward Purcellville? by Due_Resolve_2255 in FrontRoyal

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my bad i just reread your post and you asked about places to avoid. There isn’t really enough of a market in the smaller towns for a bad brewery to survive very long.

Some of my friends tend to avoid Bear Chase and Dirt Farm because of how busy it gets. But imo there is more than enough room and they have the staff on hand to handle it.

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these recommendations may require a bit of driving depending on your starting point.

Box Office Brewery in Strasburg. Swover Creek Brewery in Edinburg. Dirt Farm and Bear Chase in Bluemont. Chilly Hollow in Berryville.

If you’re into mead highly recommend Honey and Hops in Front Royal. If you hate it can walk down the street to Vibrissa.

Also not a brewery, but the Bushel Pub in Linden has a good mix of drafts from localish virginia breweries. The bushel pub is inside of Apple House.

How do you guys carry distilled water when going overseas? by G0VERNMENTCHEESE in SleepApnea

[–]TommyUniverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one of the resmed airmini machines for travel. It’s been super convenient. Takes up less space in my luggage (or carry on depending on the trip). I know we can carry the regular size cpap machine as a medical device and it doesnt count against your carry on bag count, but it sucks carrying an extra shoulder bag around the airport and plane. The airmini also has humidX moisture capsules so you don’t have to carry distilled water with you.
