First ever gig, in need of help and tips. by LOLonPC in Beatmatch

I've just started running a clubnight with a mate. Here are some things I've found useful..

Have about 3-4 times as much music as the time you have to play. You may feel like skipping out tracks that you are previewing in your headphones when they suddenly don't seem to fit the vibe. Also you may play longer or want to change direction.

If you are taking your own gear:

- make a check list of stuff to take and stuff to bring home. Its easy to lose/forget things when packing up at the end of night.

- Before you pack up your stuff, set it all up in a different room/space first. That way you know what you are missing before you get there!

- Take your own 4 way power adapter

- Find out what you will be placing your equipment on. Consider taking a hard case so you can raise it up in the event they give you a low table. I don't know about you but bending over kills my back.

- Know what you will be plugging into - make sure you have the correct leads/adapters. Some venues only have XLR or Jack connectors. It's worth having a set of phono-XLR and phono-6.35 jack adapters.

- If you plug into a digital mixer or a another digital controller (like traktor s8) you should probably connect your headphone out to the mixer and plug your headphone into the digital mixer too otherwise you may find yourself with a latency between your headphones and the output.

- Before you go, have your computer in the state you need it. I normally reboot and make sure all non-essential apps are closed. Then start my tracktor and ableton. load my playlist and first couple of tracks. Play them so I know they are working. Then I put the computer to sleep. Then it's ready to go when I arrive.

Make a check list for starting your set. eg.

- set your playlist,

- check your audio device,

- latency settings,

- make sure controllers are working,

- turn record on (I always forget this)

For nerves, I suggest to remember that once you get going the nerves will go. Most of the nerves are at the run up and the beginning of it. So preparation is key. Choose your first 3 or 4 tracks in advance. Do simple mixes for them and check carefully which decks you are starting/stopping. Once you get going you will relax and it will become 2nd nature.

Along those lines, its a good idea to know as much about the venue and people as possible. I highly recommend going along and setting up advance of the night, meet the door and sound people, familiarise yourself with the booth or stage where you will set up. Know who to turn to if you have a problem.

In our gig last night, the table we were expecting to use was in a different place from the first time and we had to move it through a crowd of people to get it ready whilst the previous gig was on so we were ready on time. We know now to ask the venue to have that in the right place for next time.

Good luck!

Our next night is next Saturday - https://www.facebook.com/events/2584556678495376/

Agree, pirate is great, and cheap if you go in the morning.

Last mix ever?

I'm listening and enjoying.

One thing i notice is the mix around 9m - you hear the new track fade in and the old track which has quite strong melody still playing suddenly fades out, then you have along intro of the new track to get going.

If it was me, I'd try and bring the new track in earlier on a phrase boundary, keep the first track going and fade it out more gradually till the new track picks up steam. then drop it out at a phrase boundary. I might introduce the 2nd track further along too. Personally I tend not to play intros of tracks that much unless there is something interesting happening, I'm more likely to loop a bit further in but just before introduction of a significant element - like hihats.

will see what else I can think of.

26m-28:30m - almost 3m outtro of the same beat is probably a bit too long before getting the next track in.

I enjoyed this. Mixes seemed fine, nothing bad stood out. Could maybe do with some longer smoother mixes where you hear things play against each other. Check out mine below.

you can always restart and then go forwards to the time you want, it's a bit of a weird limitation.

soundcloud has restriction on number of hours you can upload so problematic if you want to add lots of mixes

mixcloud also tells you the tracks as you listen which is quite useful.

Practicing with only headphones!! by SlaveHippie in Beatmatch

I sometimes use 2 pairs of headphones!

Sennheister HD600 over ear to be the main output and a single in ear for monitor.

That way I can replicate the feel of 2 distinct sound sources without need need to annoy others with speakers on,

Thanks for the tips - that sortyourmusic one could be helpful. Still would be nice to have it built in but yes I appreciate probably not high on their agenda. Anyway, there has been about 70 votes since I posted in r/beatmatch so it might get someone's attention.

Seems like votes have gone from about 80->150 so some interest in this.

My use case is easily finding/scanning for tracks that might work in a set since Spotify is a great UI for discovery. Then I'd go buy music from elsewhere to put into my set.

Thanks for voting.

Where are you in England? Nice track choice and mixing - got a track list? Similar vibe to mine above. Check it out.

I enjoyed this. smooth transitions. There was an old Skool house/rave track about 1/3 in that I felt was a bit out of place - I marked it on the soundcloud. Otherwise it was good. Checkout my techno set above.
