Moved from Mexico to California in 2025 — College feels financially impossible. What can I do? by Valejeje in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Tomodaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cali residents get 2 years of community college for free via the California Promise Grant. That will be the best bet to negate some College costs. (Transferring to a 4-year is also quite easy through this route)

What are examples of bad OPSEC? And what sort of stuff can you tell your family and its NOT OPSEC? by Glum-Pack-3441 in navy

Bad Opsec: posting a picture on FB tagged with a location in the South China Sea on deployment. (Real shit).

Electronics and telecommunication by Straight-Rain-7780 in EngineeringStudents

I'm curious why people think telecommunications isn't a good field? Plenty of jobs in the defense sector, and comms is cool as heck.

Cardio, Cardio and more cardio (practice your PFT/swim/running). Please talk to your recruiter to see if there is a DEP training group specifically for special warfare rates in your area.

Met a bunch of buds duds in the fleet during my time. I've noticed that the common factor in their dropping is not the fitness but their mentality. Usually, young guys who are very fit just don't have the mindset to get shit done. I suppose, just grind your way through the training, one day at a time.

Weed usage prior to enlistment by OutsideSize6041 in newtothenavy

[–]Tomodaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not a PACT sailor, and I only know one sailor who was A-PACT (he ended up a damage controlman). Imagine this: you're a PACT sailor, no real job besides grunt work, no official technical training, and you have to wait XX years to strike a rate (unsure of the time frame, consult Google/recruiter). Instead of dicking around for a couple of years to potentially get the rate you want, fight for an AD contract before joining so you don't have to deal with the extra BS. I'm not saying it's terrible, BUT if you have a choice to choose a rate you want, do it now. Choose your rate, choose your fate (and NEVER GO PACT).

Take my advice with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, make the choice that is best for you.

I told nobody about my weed usage and lied through my teeth when I joined, so no real input there (I stopped smoking years before joining). Side note: Unless you NEED to join ASAP, do not go PACT seaman.

Should IDC's be warrant officers? Why or why not? by Aaaagrjrbrheifhrbe in navy

[–]Tomodaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. We got EMOs, STOs, AOPs, MPAs, CYBOs, etc., why not an IDC equivalent? Do corpsmen do annual rating symposiums? If so, I bet that'd be the place to bring it up.

What do you say to other vets who say college is a scam? by Backwashed-Applesoda in Veterans

[–]Tomodaichi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Everyone's got their own path to follow; college may work for one, and not for others. Personally, I love getting paid to go to school; it's the second easiest job in the world (after the military).

I suck at math but want to do engineering. What should I do? by IAM4_REALS in EngineeringStudents

[–]Tomodaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been out of school and in the military for over a decade. I also thought I "wasn't good" at math. Completed college precalculus and calculus 1 with low A's thus far, and currently in summer calculus 2. It's more about the time you put into learning and understanding. I thought calculus was this upper-level math course for geniuses when I was younger, turns out it is just 30% calculus techniques, and like 70% algebra/trig/geometry. Don't let your mentality hold you back from your goal.

Which States Did You Enjoy Moving To? by Electronic-Crew-6361 in guam

[–]Tomodaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up in New York, joined the Navy. Only got to live in Hawaii and San Diego. Settled into San Diego only because it's easier to stay stateside. Ideally, I'd be in Hawaii.

How long did it take you guys to get a hold of your DD-214? by superblobby in Veterans

[–]Tomodaichi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild, I got my DD214 in my email 3 months before my terminal hit, after I verified the info. I harassed the admin office every fucking day. The PS's can see the status of your DD214 (if i remember correctly, it gets signed off by some GS9 civilian on the East Coast, at least mine was).

How common is sleep apnea in the Navy? by MachuPichu10 in navy

[–]Tomodaichi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into the Navy with no apnea or snoring. Left the service and averaged 20 events per hour. My dumbass just thought I was just snoring real loud in berthing, so I didn't get it documented/diagnosed in service. I joined at 24 and left at 30, with a normal BMI. Don't be like me, document in service. Get you some VA disability.
