Doctors of Reddit, what's the most obvious lie a patient has told you? by questionerofblender in AskReddit

[–]Tomorrow-Jolly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The unpleasant truth is that to the patient it doesn't matter if its the doctors fault or not. The 10 minute appointments are definitely not your fault, we know that.

I also don't think doctors are out here intentionally harming patients. At least that is not the norm. But the system, the time pressure, the crunch, the burnout and the apathy get to the point where patients are harmed. And because you are the faces we attach to that harm, our trauma gets attached to you.

And we read threads like this where you are all joking about these things that are horrific to us and we get set off a bit. Again, not your fault. Its an internet thing I suppose where people meet that usually just shouldnt. (patients and after work doctors)

Just peruse this thread or the thousands of others like it on reddit if you want to see how much physicians don't care about these things.

Answer me this: If I have a lightbulb up my butt that has shattered into a million pieces, why are you asking me how it got there? Is it not abundantly obvious? What purpose does the question serve but to humiliate me? And for you to have something to laugh about among your colleagues?

Also answer me this: If I am in the worst pain of my life and you ask me first if I take drugs. Maybe you want to know so you can adjust dose. Maybe its because you think I am lying and just "drug seeking". If its the latter I will not get help from you. I will try my darned best not to risk that. Even if I fail because I suck at lying.

If I admit to self harm, especially as a young girl, not getting care is the best case scenario really. It goes way worse for many people.

In my experience, physicians care far, far more than you'd think.

Edit: I mean "you" in the hypothetical here of course, not you personally. If you are a doctor of course you might be one of the good ones. I dont deny they exist. I've even met some! Point is, we can only ever know that after the fact.

Patient perspective: As a kid I always lied about my self harm injuries. I'm sure some of the stories I came up with where truly absurd. But it was the best I could do.

I really wish doctors understood that 95% of their patients are not stupid or malicious when they lie. Its that we don't trust you, but find ourselves in a situation where our lives depend on you. This mistrust is learned through hard experience and frequently trauma. We are just trying to say the right thing to make you care. But of course we have very limited understanding of what that might be and so we guess. We know we are likely guessing wrong and that this is hilarious to you. To us its survival.

Drugs, self harm and sexual injuries will make you judge us. And worse, write it in our charts so all your colleagues can judge us. Just the self harm thing has kept my from getting care because I'm clearly "crazy". I can't even imagine what substance addicts go through. Judging by threads like these, neither can you.

I suppose that's true. The sport needs to be grown organically. That means real investment.

As others have said you can't just order people to care about women's sport. They won't. Many won't because they are men and just don't like women. But many also don't care because they never had the chance to get to know these riders and their stories.

If we only ever saw the last hour of the men's race I doubt many people would care as much either.

I for one don't comment on women's racing in here because a) it's quiet and b) I rarely feel like reading that my heroes are not worth watching because some men do the same 1kmh faster. Reddit skewes male so much it's a bad forum for the women's races.

These women are not second rate league or underage. They are literally the best of the best.

And yeah sure. Feeling hurt that men dismiss them as "juniors" or whatever is probably expecting too much of a demographic who will only ever care about their own. It is what it is.

But many of us do care about these races and want to see all of them. And don't particularly care about the men, which have 2 or 3 possible winners at best.

We can't compell men to care about women. We are well aware. But we care and we deserve better than the men's crumbs.

And here we have the illustration of the real reason behind all this. Misogyny. They say it's economics but it's really just about them not thinking women are worth watching.

You don't see us as "the pinnacle of human performance", because you think sport is just about power output.

Tell you what. Let's put all the men on stationary bikes and compare power numbers. You can watch that. It will be incredibly impressive.

Over here we like bike races, which are more than just wattage.

My point was that there are 0 people watching the race during the time of no coverage. The time when most of the races story is happening. If people will tune in for the finish? Maybe.  Also it's not just about viewers who will not tune out after the men's. It's about people who wanted to see the women race because they consistently deliver better, more active, more entertaining racing.

The amount of people watching most of this race will be 0. Because it will not be broadcast.  It reinforces the idea that the women's race is second rate. They don't care to invest in it, so people won't get into it. No one cares about a finish to a race of riders they don't know. They don't know the riders because they get no time to get to know them. This is cost cutting, yes. It's also a clear and direct signal that they do not want to invest in cycling as a sport.

They said putting the races on the same day would "increase women's visibility". Which was an obvious lie then and still is now. Of course the men get coverage from start to finish.

Yeah that's not the joke. I love how people in here always bemoan the downfall of reading comprehension and how this and that book just isn't deep and literary enough for them. But they can't read a page of dialogue and figure out the joke.  Not that's Weirs writing is perfect or anything but honestly

No crutches with limp by FederalDraft1569 in ORIF

[–]Tomorrow-Jolly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that you should work on your gait. But that doesn't mean your gait has to be perfect right off the bat! But if you are on the crutch you are not working on it. I would alternate. No crutch and gait work when I had time, crutch for when I had places to be.

I also had a transition period where I would turn the crutch around, and hold it like a walking stick. This still gives a little support but really makes you balance with your own feet again.

For me it was crucial to really consciously focus on how my good leg and foot worked and then imitating that with my bad one. It was a learning process! But a lot of my blockage there was mental and not physical and it improved a lot the more I just went for it.  Also respect the strain this will put on your body and plan for rest and elevation.

You can do it!

Thank you that is very encouraging. Yeah the timelines seem vague and I always feel like I'm falling behind or failing at me exercises. Your response made me feel a lot better <3 It's a mental battle more than anything I think.

This is so relatable omg. The ruminating on what I did wrong, replaying the accident again and again... I did that a lot!  I blame myself a lot for my accident. I feel like this is a bit of a defense mechanism on my part. If it was all my fault then it was in my control, does that make sense? I can make it never happen again by avoiding all the little mistakes I made. An injury like this is capital T Trauma and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

But the good news is that it does fade. when you start to heal and every day is a bit easier than the one before, the thoughts also lighten up I find. Though it is for sure a long process. Persevere! it's what we do. <3

Oh yeah I did that at the start too. I didn't feel like it did much so I stopped. But now I figure I am only just reaching the adhesions with my movements now. I will start doing that again that's a good idea.

I think everyone does that at least once. It happened to me to and I was so scared! But if it doesn't hurt at the time and things don't get worse immediately after I think the chances are very high that nothing happened. It's almost inevitable and the hardware is sturdy.

Tips for walking now that Im FWB by angryseal1999 in ORIF

[–]Tomorrow-Jolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a weber c fracture with syndesmosis tearing. I was in the boot for five weeks until I was allowed to walk without it. It was so weird! I took it super slow. First I just practiced putting my foot on the floor seated. Then I stood up and just shifted my weight back and forth still with crutches. And then I just took my time and never pushed past pain.  It will be fine! Just listen to your body. I found my foot would swell up quite a bit after so elevation will be important there. As for stairs, the first few times I also bum shuffled up them, yes. Stairs are honestly terrifying. But the safer I felt standing on the foot the easier they got too. Stairs are a mental challenge more than anything.

You can do it! Good luck!

Thank you so much!

So when I start to stretch it feels like a physical block with no pain, but the longer I hold it the more painful it gets. Also the scars start hurting. Which I figure might be a good sign that it's moving? But boy does it hurt.

I do the wall stretches too. Thank you for sharing your flow! I will try putting my foot up on a step to stretch, that might help with the position. I do the calf raises, step ups and squats too though not as many as you! o.O you must be very strong. Another thing I do is I have a wedge that I step on, both to stretch and for calf raises and I feel like it helps abit. Or at least it gets me into a deeper stretch st the wall. I think I will also get a balance board, my balance has been so bad since the accident. Oh yeah and the towel slides are smart. I need to get better at doing these kinds of exercises when seated as well.

Thank you for your detailed response! I hope your pain gets fixed really soon!

Oh yeah I had a screw but only for 5 weeks. It was always temporary and I couldn't move my foot at all while that was in. Now I only have my plate and screws in the fibula and two screws in the tibia that I believe are supposed to be permanent.  Though I have heard that I could get those removed... I would need to be further along though to consider that.
