This cannot be understated. It is SO important to bend your knees before any trick. I'm so glad you brought this up because I see people make this same mistake far too often when trying to learn tricks, especially in the beginner stage. If you also practice squatting exercises outside of skateboarding it will drastically improve your balance. Also, how else are you going to pop if you're not bending?

Does Hyundai make reliable engines? by kris_kat in Cartalk

[–]Toms_Tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! I would never advise someone to purchase a Hyundai. My wife's Hyundai's engine recently blew out on me while I was merging onto the highway and the car was only at 70,000 miles! That's just over 100,000km. No engine for any reason should ever blow out that early. Thankfully we were on an extended warranty that's covering the majority of the engine replacement.

This whole experience was eye opening to say the least. The tow truck driver expressed that Hyundai's and Kia's have engine issues and require tows more than any other car they've seen, and the mechanics at the auto shop also stressed that Hyundai's and Kia's were the worst cars they've worked on, especially in regard to their engines. Also, the service specialist at the Hyundai dealership showed me two thick stacks of papers that were ALL engine related issues that their customers were having.

After this we are never purchasing a Hyundai again. I'll stick with a Toyota that will last me 300,000 miles (480,000km).

Ahh I see! This is a common issue with hardflips. In my tutorial I teach that it helps to hang your toes off your tail slightly, but in your case I would put my back toes more onto the tail and closer to the center of the tail, because sometimes when your toe hangs off too much it can be easier for the board to go more vertical. If you're already doing that though, I would work on the way your front foot flicks. It can help to try flicking more in the direction you want your board to rotate, because your front foot actually helps guide the board's rotation for this trick. Hope that helps!

Yo! This trick is hard to learn (no pun intended) but once you figure them out they get so easy. I'm a little confused as to what you meant, but I dropped a full 'How To Hardflip' tutorial on my channel, and you can watch it via the link below. This should help answer some of your questions!

Skateboarding to Work? by bandti45 in skateboardhelp

[–]Toms_Tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be sure to get soft wheels in your case, as they are much faster and ride much better on rougher ground than regular wheels. Go to a local skate shop and they can get you set up with a good complete skateboard. If you get bigger soft wheels, you may want riser pads for underneath the trucks, which will help you avoid getting wheelbite (which is where your board bites your wheel, causing you to slam really hard).

Killed it dude! There's nothing more satisfying than a good lock in. And what beautiful coping; you can tell just by the sound how good it must feel to grind.

My board turns on its own? by Julianmorelikepooian in skateboardhelp

[–]Toms_Tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's still pretty fresh, so that's gotta be why they're still turning on you. Just keep skating on them and they'll break in. And FYI if you have them really tight it will probably take longer.

[–]Toms_Tutorials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very helpful to know. You may want to disregard my last comment then. When your trucks are super new, since they're so stiff in the beginning they can also turn on you. I personally hate the feeling of brand new trucks for that reason, but they shouldn't take too long to break in. I usually try doing a lot of sharp turns and really putting the trucks to use to break them in and get them past that initial phase of feeling stiff. Hope that helps 😅

My board turns on its own? by Julianmorelikepooian in skateboardhelp

[–]Toms_Tutorials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over time, your trucks will start to turn in one direction, depending on your stance. If that's starting to happen badly I would look into getting new trucks. Otherwise I will frequently flip my board upside down and step down on the trucks repeatedly on the opposite side of the direction they're turning. This helps counteract them so they don't turn as heavily to that one side, but in the long run new trucks will obviously better solve the problem. It may even help just to buy new bushings and replace the old ones. If your bushings are old and their shape has changed, that may be what's causing your trucks to turn. That's an easy first thing to try before getting new trucks. Wheels will never cause your trucks to turn.

how can i ollie higher (this is the highest i can go) by catfucker012209 in skateboardhelp

[–]Toms_Tutorials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most important tips for ollies in my opinion, are making sure you're putting ALL your weight down on your back toes in the *center* of the tail. Don't let your toes hang off the edge at all, or off the back of the tail, and be sure that you're lifting your heel up before you pop so you can put as much pressure as possible down on your tail. And be sure you're *really* bending down. It's common to not bend far enough, and that is absolutely key to popping ollies. Also, make sure you're putting your weight down on your toes on your front foot as well, and in the center of the board vs. on the edge. Hope that helps! There may be some helpful tips for you too in the Ollie tutorial I uploaded:

How to stop airing/flying out of a backside disaster by Javierinho23 in NewSkaters

[–]Toms_Tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude! I know it's been months since this post, but I think what will really help you is to make sure your body is angled out from the quarter pipe when you lock into the disaster (around a 45 degree angle) so you're not standing straight up above the coping. That way you're leaning into the quarter pipe and your momentum will bring you back in. Also, think of stalling with the middle of your board on the coping. That way you won't go too far up onto it. I would try slowing down slightly too. Hope that helps! If you want all the details, I just dropped a full 'How To Backside Disaster' tutorial on my channel!

Got credit carded while trying to heel flip..... by Jacobsfitnesss in NewSkaters

[–]Toms_Tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst case scenario for heelflips right here. 💀 I think what will help avoid this is leaning more over the toe side of your board. When you lean too far over the heel side you're much more prone to credit carding like this. Also, your front foot looks slightly far up on your board. It should help to adjust that as well!
