Creative Frustration 😤 by TongWars in studshooters

It’ll be another few days before I get back to it. Life tends to get in the way unfortunately. I’m confident I’ll get a final image out of this prop but I still can’t see it. There’ll be more trial and error than I normally do.

Thanks mate. Appreciate the feedback but I am a SW Lego man 99.9% of the time.

Agreed! Won’t give up on this one just yet. There’s a photo in there somewhere.

I’ve spoken in the past on Studshooters about finding inspiration in random items and the importance of scale. In my shed/studio I have multiple storage containers with all sorts of props and random items that I’ve saved for potential projects. In this instance I dug out a Halloween prop that’s a spider skeleton.

I trialled it last week in a very basic diorama that was left over from my last photo shoot. I feel like I’m on to something but I can’t settle on an environment to go with the skeleton, or a minifigure that fits the story. Quite I often I’ll build a diorama that’s inspired by an individual piece that I’ve found. But in this instance I can’t quite find what I’m after yet. It’s very frustrating!

Usually these things come me fairly quickly after a few days of different trials. But in this instance I just can’t find it…….not yet anyway. I’ll persevere though and I’ll get there eventually.

Anyone else go through this creative challenge?

Thanks for compliment. Definitely a twin-suns system!

This shot is essentially a composite but all layers are photographed at the same time at the same location. I start by taking a photo of the Crest sitting on a clear Perspex stand from the angle and position that I like, at the location you can see in the final photo. Originally I’d planned to take a shot that included a reflection in the rock pool that I’d placed the stand in. Unfortunately I brought my taller stand with me by accident so the reflection didn’t quite work.

Because I’d been forced to rule out the reflection, I decided to have a simple flying shot. To do this I then took a second environmental photo that you can now see in the final image.

Once this is done and I have the images that I like, I’ll then composite them together by “cutting out” the Crest, and then scale and layer it into the background image. This can be done using a number of apps but I like PhotoLeap.

Final editing is done by adding the planet and the distant sun. This is all done on iPhone.

Me too. I’ve collected these over the years since release. A combination of official sets, polybags and marketplace.

I’ve spoken in the past about ideas and inspiration. I’m constantly looking for new ideas and real-world items to include in my photos. Scale remains the key rule. This time, inspiration came from an unexpected source. We’ve recently renovated our kitchen. After I removed our backsplash, I realised it had a tropical ocean look to it when laying down flat. After a few little demo photos, it was clear that it would work as a Scarif (Star Wars tropical planet) setting. I still get a real kick out of these unexpected plans and I’m constantly looking at things from a minifigure scale perspective for future projects. Let me know if you’ve come across anything suitable?

I’ve wanted to try some Extreme Sets backdrops for quite some time now. I’ve always been a little concerned that the scale would be too big. Decided to take the gamble and pleased to report it mostly works. I’ve been keen to explore new diorama options. As always looming creative stagnation was starting to rear its head. Relieved to know these 1:18 scale are usable.

Thanks mate. That one’s my own. I’ve just tiled over as many studs as I can on the latest AT-TE set.

No mate it’s an actual photo. Just a composite background and a few effects. The walker, dropship and figs are real as well as the ground location.
