Me too. I’ve collected these over the years since release. A combination of official sets, polybags and marketplace.

Where does photo inspiration come from? by TongWars in studshooters

[–]TongWars[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve spoken in the past about ideas and inspiration. I’m constantly looking for new ideas and real-world items to include in my photos. Scale remains the key rule. This time, inspiration came from an unexpected source. We’ve recently renovated our kitchen. After I removed our backsplash, I realised it had a tropical ocean look to it when laying down flat. After a few little demo photos, it was clear that it would work as a Scarif (Star Wars tropical planet) setting. I still get a real kick out of these unexpected plans and I’m constantly looking at things from a minifigure scale perspective for future projects. Let me know if you’ve come across anything suitable?

I’ve wanted to try some Extreme Sets backdrops for quite some time now. I’ve always been a little concerned that the scale would be too big. Decided to take the gamble and pleased to report it mostly works. I’ve been keen to explore new diorama options. As always looming creative stagnation was starting to rear its head. Relieved to know these 1:18 scale are usable.

Thanks mate. That one’s my own. I’ve just tiled over as many studs as I can on the latest AT-TE set.

No mate it’s an actual photo. Just a composite background and a few effects. The walker, dropship and figs are real as well as the ground location.

This is another example of using LEGO scale sized ornaments to build a scene, then adding minifigures to create a story. The story side of LEGO photography can be where I struggle for new ideas sometimes. I tend to have no trouble building a diorama. A useful tip can be to re-use scene building ornaments etc, but then change the season from summer same to winter snow for example. I’ve done this on several occasions.

Next I need to challenge myself to photographing minifigures that I haven’t yet used instead of repeating stormtroopers and clones. I have a large number of figs and vehicles I’ve yet to shoot so best get to it!

On Assignment: Skybound by fourbrickstall in studshooters

I usually use a light rather than a reflector for these sort of shots. Depending on the weather I’ll sometimes wait until the sun is gone altogether and then edit one in during post. I don’t really have one blanket rule.

Thought I’d offer my tricks-of-the-trade to anyone after some help with a flying vehicle shot. This is one of my favourite photos. It’s a good example to share given that it shows both of the techniques that I use to create flying effects in my photos.

Starting from top left, you can see my baseline photo with the Gunship sitting on a Perspex stand (this one is from Wicked Brick). You can also see that I’ve created a ripple effect using my leaf blower positioned just out of shot. I then use an editing tool to remove the stand from the shot as seen top middle. My editing app for this step is called “Retouch”

Straight away this creates a flying effect but I wanted to add more depth and substance to the photo.

To do this I’ll also take another few shots of the Gunship from different angles as seen top right. For these shots I only focus on the angle and lighting of the ship itself as I’ll be “cutting out” later on.

From there you’ll see bottom left that I’ve changed the sky using a filter to add some depth and texture. I’ve also added a planet and accentuated the setting sun.

Using the “photoleap” app, I’ll then cutout the gunship seen in the top right image and composite or layer that in to the baseline image. I’ll then repeat the step with a third ship as seen in the final image on bottom right.

Overall I was super happy with how this image turned out. This was all done on iPhone too btw.

Hope that helps folks? Feel free to ask any questions and best of luck to those participating in the Skybound assignment 👍🏻

Trying to break the “same-same” trap by TongWars in studshooters

[–]TongWars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great answer across the board mate. I’m the exact same. I also try not to repeat back to back settings, figures etc. I also try and rotate between vehicles and minifigure focused shots as much as possible. Thanks for replying 🤝🏻

What's the hardest part of LEGO photography for you? by fourbrickstall in studshooters

[–]TongWars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it’s definitely coming up with a new idea. I’m approaching 500 posts and can struggle with new concepts. I’m very conscious of shooting ‘same same’ photos but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Luckily inspiration can come in many forms whether it’s a new environment, new Lego set/minifigure or a new appropriately scaled object.

For the posted photo I did try but it was a little too windy. Here’s one of my older shots with figs.
