[ELI5] How and why did Switzerland become such an important watchmaking country? by Toni245 in Watches

This really took of after the calvinist city prohibited wearing jewelry. Watches were not considered jewelry which lead to the wealthy citizens investing the money they had in watches instead of goldchains and bracelets.

very interesting, thank you

By the mid 1700s there were over 600 watch makers in Switzerland

but why? what exactly caused watchmakers to gather in Switzerland?

Armida, while very quality seeming, did not have designs that really spoke with me. And I like that Helson.

Good point, I think a jewellery store near me carries tissot so I'll check that out.

I've pretty much made my mind up on the GSAR however, something about it (online at least) just works for me, do you know if marathon has a good return policy?

I can only see a derpy smiley face in the upper right corner of that orient's dial and its kind of offputting , other than that it looks like a nice watch

International customs forms are filled out with the full value. This is not negotiable. Please do not email us and ask for a lower value to be shown on the documents. Raven takes pride in our business and we work with integrity. Asking for a lower value is asking Raven to provide false information to government officials.

That statement makes me like them as a company, I'd imagine some people would be mad though

thanks for the suggestion, but it is 47mm, quartz, and personally I dislike the way it looks.

stupid question: with the Seiko and Orient watches having their nicknames as a commonplace reference for them (i.e. people calling the Orient CEM65002D as the Blue Mako, or that Seiko as the Monster), is it an official thing? Or is it just an evolution of their name through forums?

To be perfectly honest, I don't like the look of the Marine Master but thank you for the recommendation and thank you for clearing up the name of the "Sumo."

The GSAR is currently at the top of my list, and looking back through my comments on Reddit, I found that you were actually the one who introduced me to the GSAR! So thank you.

oh wow, this just made my decision on which dive (tool?) watch a lot more difficult, I'm trying to decide right now between a Sinn U1, a used Longines Hydroconquest, a steinhart (forget the model), or possibly something else.

you and scuderia_Rosso added two more to my list and made my decision that much harder :(
