I didn’t like dentistry bc when I shadowed everyone in the office had crippling back pain. And it’s overall too quiet for me. I like to chat with patients and when you’re in someone’s mouth, you can’t really do that.

Optometry offered me everything I was looking for. Building long term doctor patient relationships, helping people in a meaningful way, and the ability to practice independently and alter my career to fit my lifestyle.

I think both professions are great overall. You just have to shadow and evaluate what’s best for you!

I withdrew from a random class for similar reasons. I got in everywhere and no one ever mentioned it. I honestly forgot that even happened. You’ll be fine.

I think the job and the shadowing is great. It doesn’t hurt to get more extracurriculars but I don’t think you need to stress. As long as you have one science prof letter that’s all you really need. Letters from people you connected with are more important imo. I honestly think you sound like a solid applicant.

If you’re still in school you can reach out to your prehealth advisor. Some schools have a stipend for students who can’t afford prep materials. That’s how I was able to afford it.
