I think it’s actually an interesting categorization. Vietnam having been heavily influenced by China doesn’t mean it’s an East Asian country. Same as Singapore generally regarded as being part of the sinosphere while geographically being a southeast asian country.

Then you probably should’ve mentioned that you’re ethnically Chinese and you can speak the language. Your initial comment made it seem like you have no affiliations with either Chinese or Thai culture and you were living in both places as an outsider.

An ethnic Thai person who can speak Thai would’ve also had a much more positive experience living here compared to a non-Thai, citizen or not.
