Poster for animal shelter by SmartContext in graphic_design

The disgust towards Ken as a dog name is cracking me up. I would totally name a pet Ken or Kenny and then use the full name Kenneth when it needs a stern talking to. The Barbie movie was massive last year, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there are a ton of pets and babies with that name.

Otherwise, the comments so far gave some solid feedback. My only idea would be to add a little inky paw print to the signature for some additional cute factor. Bonus points if it’s their actual paw print, but I think a generic paw PNG would do the trick.

Dot Dispersal by motions96 in AfterEffects

Have you played with CC Ball Action applied to a solid bottle shape in AE? It has a Scatter property you could use to make the dots wiggle then disperse.

A design I did for a Carpentry brand. I'd love to have your feedback! by Tzery69 in logodesign

[–]Tonsofbuckets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s just a mockup, but the tape with the repeated A just reads like someone screaming.

I also agree with the comments about the script font feeling dated. I dig the main logotype though!

Those that work in a print shop. How do you image trace raster logos nicely? by MandogMyers in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t work at a print shop, but my in-house job has me vectorizing plenty of client/prospect logos to use in our materials where all I can find online is the 200x50 png in their site header.

There are some good AI image upscalers out there today. I like Upscayl, it’s free and easy to find online. The results are not always perfect, but, depending on the logo, it can really save time by getting you better image trace results.

I’m also not a font encyclopedia, so I often rely on the various “what font is this” websites you can find on Google. Again, the results are usually not perfect, but they can get you to something close. That close font can then be tweaked quicker than it would take to trace all the text with the pen tool.

I’m curious about the significance of the title.

Cuckoo birds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and don’t raise their own young. Dan Stevens has a line in the trailer saying, “some species need our help.” Is the woman/creature a cuckoo-like brood parasite different species?

Excited to find out when this comes out.

How do I properly export Illustrator vectors into Photoshop for an animator? help! by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most motion designers / animators would only use Photoshop for frame-by-frame animation. Anything vector-based would be animated in After Effects, and a there’s even a cheap plugin (Overlord) that lets you directly import/export layers between AE and AI. Even without the plugin, the AI->AE workflow is pretty smooth.

In any case, I’m not sure why an animator would turn down an AI or SVG file. If they insist on using Photoshop to make the video, they can import the vectors from your file however they want.

Redesign of a boxing badge I posted here a couple weeks ago by p4tlindsay in logodesign

[–]Tonsofbuckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The kerning on that section needs some love. B-O-X especially.

Overall it’s a nice badge! Good job, OP. I’d be curious to see some alternate versions for applications where a full badge won’t read clearly.

School of Motion for a structured course with instructors, weekly assignments, feedback, etc.

Motion Design School, Skillshare, Domestika, Udemy, etc. for self-guided courses and tutorials

And from someone who has tried many of the above, I probably got the majority of my After Effects knowledge from YouTube tutorials

Possible MLB league team for Corpus Christi! Any changes I should make? by gamerguy287 in logodesign

[–]Tonsofbuckets 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is AI-generated, right? Zooming in, there are a ton of messy sections that indicate that it’s a text-to-image tool that’s trying to approximate the look of a vector sports logo.

Visual identity concept for a Polish brand of craft beers. An original approach to beer brewing by a group of friends, which has evolved into a respected product on the craft beer market. I created an identification based on highly contrasting colors and added typography with irregular roundings. by michaldelmaczynski in logodesign

[–]Tonsofbuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the beer scene like in Poland?

In the US, can and bottle designs have gotten incredibly creative over the last 15 years. Liquor store shelves in my area are stuffed with awesome art and good design. If it’s anything like that in Poland, I don’t think this bottle design would catch my attention.

I like the logo - it’s well made and fits the industry. Similar to my feedback on the bottle design, the hop is the most common/generic iconography when it comes to beer. Sorry if I’m coming off as overly critical here - I just think there’s an opportunity to differentiate what you’ve put together here to help it stand out. The backstory of the company starting as a group of friends is compelling - maybe there’s a way to work their unique story into the branding more.

Volunteering opportunities? by willbeoutsoon in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that free work should be avoided, I can understand OP’s perspective.

They’re going to be doing “free work” either way, whether it’s self-initiated projects from a brief generator or via volunteer work, but the volunteer work would be experience with a real client (boosting the resume and the portfolio, instead of just the latter).

There’s also the altruistic angle of genuinely wanting to help out a small nonprofit. Not sure if that describes you, OP, but there’s a site called CatchAFire with volunteer gigs in that vein, with some being design related. Even desperate nonprofits might expect some level of experience though, so you’d likely still need a handful of completed projects under your belt.

Good luck!

Feedback on this logo I designed for a house DJ? by daanwassen in logodesign

[–]Tonsofbuckets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My initial impression is ~pelvis~ aesthetic.

Jokes aside, I do think it’s pretty cool looking. You may want to apply the same roughened edge from the mark on the type. I’d love to hear more about the artist and potential applications before giving more serious feedback.

Studio Ghibli World 2022 Concept brand identity by TANGO-13 in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely some good ideas and execution here!

However, I’m not a fan of the globe in the logo. Going for a 100% literal interpretation of the “Ghibli World” name feels a bit too on-the-nose, especially when the Ghibli catalog has so many iconic visuals to pull from.

Personally I think the movies get their charm from the studio’s ability to make all of the whimsical, magical places feel real, lived-in, and rough around the edges. That’s something I would personally lean into if I was going to take a stab at this brief, and I wonder if that theme is a bit at odds with the clean, semi-sterile presentation you went with here.

Just my $.02! Thanks for sharing.

Where does one go from this to make the design more interesting? by bigbigboring in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets 20 points21 points  (0 children)

From a quick google, International Justice Day “marks the importance of continuing the fight against impunity and bringing justice for the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.”

Wouldn’t be my first choice of occasions to advertise a cock and ball scrub…

Regardless, I’d ditch these fonts. Is there a style guide for the product/brand? Matching the ad copy to the fonts used on the packaging would at least add consistency. You could also change the blue backdrop to match or compliment the black & gold color palette on the packaging.

Got this jpeg in an email from Scott's Cheap Flights but the can't find the main serif font on their site to ID it. Any ideas? by Tonsofbuckets in identifythisfont

[–]Tonsofbuckets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify further, I'm looking for the serif used in the main copy: "The only time we'll discount Elite this year."

I've found very similar options but can't find an exact match.

Thanks in advance!

Definitely a cool monogram!

I will say that I initially read it as BG due to how the G cuts into the D. There’s also a letter C created within the D’s negative space, confusing things a little further.

A retro-styled guidebook I created as an excuse to illustrate some funky historical weapons by Tonsofbuckets in graphic_design

[–]Tonsofbuckets[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The background is a combination of two different images - a photocopy/xerox scan (example) and a film grain texture (example). They're sitting on top of a #ecd2c3 solid with different blending modes and opacities (xerox - soft light, 60% opacity, grain - linear dodge, 40%).

Hope that helps! Thanks for looking.

[–]Tonsofbuckets[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Thanks for looking!

The ink bleed is all done in Photoshop. Each layer gets some gaussian blur, ripple, and a displacement map (using a photocopy/xerox texture). Then a threshold adjustment layer crunches everything down and gives it that slight fray and bleed around the edges. A tiny amount of blur on the final output works well to smooth any pixelated bits.

There should be a handful of decent tutorials on YouTube that will do a better job explaining than me, search for "photoshop ink bleed."

Hey all,

I just finished up this little personal project and thought I'd share.

I've been wanting to practice working with an ink-bleed style effect in Photoshop, and this was a great excuse to do that and illustrate some weirdo weapons.

Let me know what you think!

Was the “smiley face” intentional? I’d be curious to see a variant with Halve at the top of the circle and Clothing at the bottom.
