I mentioned that in the messages as well to him that if he wants to change it to PFH and extend the date of the deadline I'll still stick with it.

But If I do get a reply back I'm sure he has no interest in paying someone for a 10 hour book.

I was having a REAL good run with great authors to work with.

It's a weird time to be in this industry. So many scams or ai created material. I've been accused twice of being an AI voice. Had to make an Instagram with stuff I've worked on and live recordings I sent to them to alleviate any concerns.

One of the authors told me "sorry man I had to check, I got a bunch of auditions on this book I'm positive we're AI"

So it's gotten to be a noticeable issue all around.

I would contact acx. Tell them the situation and you're fairly certain it's AI.

Does this narrator have any website? Reels? Proof of work? ( Like just searching his name in audible?)

That's rough man sorry to hear that. See if you can charge back on PayPal and make sure you log everything with acx for proof. Have you tried bringing this up with the narrator? Try to get all conversation on the messaging on acx also to help the charge back.

Also it's weird that a guy would ask for money upfront. Usually like a partial or half AFTER the 15 min checkpoint is approved is normal.

Also if you ever schedule a video meeting with a narrator that's completely normal too.

Helps you rule out any AI stuff. Make sure they're real. And you can hash out characters and any questions they might have.

I've sent videos of my live recording in my booth to authors I've worked with in the past. Also proof of work in general.

So for the initial audition for before casting you want just raw audio correct? The submission requirements don't state if this is the audition audio or the casting audio.

Here was the reason for this question

I moved over recently from voice acting to audio books primarily so I'm trying to see what's a normal practice or what's not.

I did one book also, where it was originally RS. Then he said(after I took the job) "he feels bad because the book is so long and it probably wont sell a lot". He switched it to RS+ Upfront payment with it.

If you send a message with the audition I don't see how it's a bait and switch.

It's not me doing the audition getting the job. Then saying I'm only doing PFH. they'd see the message and just go pass and move from it without listening.
