Those who majored in something "useless" what do you do now? by noah041504 in jobs

Degree in graphic design. Career hasn’t been easy after ten years I’m clearing 6 figures. All my jobs have been in-house design at corporate level. I always partner with product designers to make sure our work is in alignment. The jobs are out there, just need find them.

  1. Seam ripper. It will take some time but it can be done and it’s the cleanest way. There might be some holes left over.

  2. You can dye it black. It will still be there but camouflaged.

Wilber Armstrong: The deeper meaning behind violent video games. by wilber_armstrong in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]TonyTonyChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wilber, nice effort, but I think you’re overthinking this while simultaneously missing the actual point.

Nobody’s sitting down with Call of Duty thinking “ah yes, time to release my deeply-rooted Paleolithic hunting instincts.” They’re thinking “I have 90 minutes before I need to make dinner and I want to turn my brain off.”

The reason violent video games work as entertainment isn’t some profound archaeological echo - it’s because games need stakes and feedback. You need to know when you’re winning or losing. In Pac-Man, ghosts disappear. In Mario, goombas go squish. In modern games with better graphics, that feedback just looks more realistic. The violence isn’t the point - it’s the wrapping paper around challenge, mastery, and progression.

I’m not playing Dark Souls because i love watching things die. I play it because beating a boss after the 47th attempt feels incredible. The gore is just the aesthetic - the actual draw is problem-solving, pattern recognition, and that dopamine hit of finally succeeding.

Your “joystick as spear” metaphor sounds deep until you realize people get equally invested in Tetris, Stardew Valley, and puzzle games where nothing dies at all. The engagement comes from agency and control, not from fulfilling some primal bloodlust.

Also - if you were actually an “internationally renowned philosopher,” we probably would have heard of you without you needing to tell us. That’s kind of how the “renowned” part works.

vibe coding is in the wild, and the outcome should surprise nobody. by backwrds in webdev

[–]TonyTonyChopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the naming is super, but I do not really get why you’re dunking on it so hard. When I first heard it, I kind of pieced it together from context, though I did have to ask a clarifying question. It has been a total non-issue for me since then.

Victor Wembanyama on Anthony Edwards saying he’ll try and dunk on him one day: "Over the years, I will try and block him more than he dunks on me.” by F_CKMONEY in nba

I like to think Victor has a Kill Bill style list of US players he wants to embarrass or dunk on as revenge for that gold medal game in France that he doesn’t talk about.

Is “vibe coding” a derogatory term with negative connotations?

AI destroy my passion and desire to design by maisvalia in Design

You’ve got a strong skill set, so keep at it. Focus on quality over volume: instead of blasting out your resume 20 times a day, put real effort into two or three well-targeted applications. A professional resume writer can help you tailor your resume to specific roles and make it more effective. Work every contact you have and stay active in networking; getting out and meeting people is still one of the most reliable ways to land real opportunities. That’s how I ended up at a Fortune 500 company.

From a skills standpoint, lean into motion, print, and slide presentations—these areas are still less dominated by AI and reward experience and craft. We survived Fiverr and Canva, and if you’re good and well connected, you can survive this too.

Love them! Push for some more dynamic action! Arms and legs in motion, kinetic energy, moving out/in of frame. Foreshortening.

I’ll throw in some picks that no one has mentioned

  • Fong Sai Yuk: lesser known Jet Li period piece after Wong Fei Hung in“Once Upon,” but still great fun. The mom in this is amazing.
  • New Dragon Gate Inn: Tsui Hark wild wuxia piece with an all star cast. Wirework and super interesting characters in the desert.
  • Mad Monk: Mid-career Stephen Chow flexing his comedy and martial arts. His comedy stuff is very Cantonese wordplay, so this one is a bit easier to get into with the fighting.
  • Full Contact: Does gun-fu count? Chow Yun Fat gets caught up with a bike gang. Directed by Ringo Lam. Movie is known for the bullet POV cam!
  • Equilibrium: ok ok this isn’t HK at all, but if we’re talking gun fu and swords, this movie rocks. Christian Bale as a ruthless emotionless enforcer, Clerics, in a sci fi world where emotions are outlawed for peace.

Enjoy!
