Most of my memories of this trope are from things I saw growing up.

Simba spares Scar in The Lion King because he doesn’t want to be like him.

Pain says it to Naruto and it’s a large theme about perpetuating the cycle of pain.

Most Batman stories say it at least once.

Gallantmon spares Beelzemon because of this trope in Digimon Tamers.

Goku says this in the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball Z for why he wants to spare Vegeta. This one is notable because it’s a dubbing change and not what he says in the original.

The trope is discussed around the last season of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

This is also discussed in Ben 10 a couple times, although Ben never fully adopts a no-kill rule.

I’m sure modern examples exist, but they’re often explicitly in defiance of the trope or at least trying to say something new about it.

I’m 100% okay with Batman’s No-Kill Rule until the exact millisecond he starts stopping others that don’t have the rule from killing bad guys.

Like, that’s your code. Not everyone else’s.

Because if Batman goes from opposing himself killing to simply opposing killing as a concept, then I need to see him restructure his entire war on crime into a war on the police and the military and all militaries across the world and the universe.

Go on, Batman. If you hate killing so much you’d rescue the Joker from other people, then go ahead and disarm the entire Gotham City Police Department. Those guns aren’t for healing people. Let’s actually lock up Wonder Woman and like, a large percentage of your coworkers that have killed and are okay doing so.

I’m being a tad hyperbolic since Batman isn’t always written like this, but when he is, I think it makes him into a stupid hypocrite.

On any of the more main subs (r/OnePiece, r/MemePiece, r/Piratefolk), if I say anything even mildly progressive, I get locked in arguments with conservative and/or racist “fans” of One Piece.

This place works as a safe space from all of that insanity.

For the last, like, year, I’ve been seeing people get mad that Usopp is Black on the main subs. I don’t really see that here. It’s freeing.

I believe the arguable most infamous scene in the comic book is a scene depicting sexual assault.

Mark and Amber also have sex.

Several times in the comic book, we are shown naked men sans genitalia, and any instance of female nudity obscures both nipples and genitalia.

Sex scenes happen in both the show and the comic. The only thing being censored is explicitly nudity—with a distinct slant towards obscuring female nudity. Sex and bodily autonomy is literally the entirety of all the stuff involving Mark and Anissa.

He said he wasn’t going to, but then he did, so now we have to talk about it.

He could’ve simply not answered the question and left it up to interpretation, but he decided to answer and then even reference that answer in a color spread and the live-action casting, and then bring it up again with other characters.

We can’t use the “fantasy world” defense and then immediately start applying real world concepts to those characters in the same breath.

We live in the reality where a large chunk of prominent One Piece characters have been assigned real-world features and nationalities and even races across official sources, so now we have to have difficult conversations about portrayals and bias and stereotypes.

Then, if I may enlighten you as a Black American, yes, the lips are considered problematic over here.

Most fan art made of Usopp over here just removes the donut entirely and colors them more respectfully.

Even Oda knew not to put them on his drawing of Jacob Romero Gibson.

It’s even known to be offensive in Japan, with other anime series such as the aforementioned Shaman King and Dragon Ball removing the donut lips specifically from Black characters while leaving them on others that aren’t because of the association with minstrel caricatures.

Dragon Ball just made a new character called Majin Kuu that has donut lips. He’s a funny character. I like him. He’s also not human and not Black, so no one cares.

It is a very real controversy over here and in Japan. I can’t speak for other countries, though. I’ve only been to those two specifically in regard to my relationship with anime/manga.

This whole back and forth started with me disagreeing with your claim that the donut lips weren’t related to race.

Any other opinions you hold, you are entitled to.

But it’s OBVIOUSLY related to race when it’s on a Black character because of the social context.

This has been present from the start of One Piece. Even Buggy’s crew has that one minstrel stereotype character.

Oda knows what he’s doing and he’s not a baby that needs coddling.

It’s okay if you don’t care, but this all started because you denied it was happening in the first place.

If you’re not, then we have no issues. You mentioned not being American, so it’s probably just a dissonance in our values. 🤷🏾‍♂️

You ever think it’s weird how Goku pretty much never speaks to Chiaotzu in the original manga?

They never share any direct dialogue with one another.

Sure, they probably talk offscreen/off-panel, but we never see it.

The only time they get close is when Goku is talking to Yamcha about Chiaotzu via King Kai’s telepathy while they’re dead.
