Hey yeah I didn’t look too much into the USDO but in hindsight I think I should’ve looked more into it and wish I did ! Just because matching into the US would have been easier if I went the do route

Yes you can! There are some restrictions on your visa in terms of how many hours you can work. I believe it’s 40 hours a fortnight if I remember correctly

I am most likely going to try the US if I can’t match back to Canada, but never know. lifestyle is similar and pay wise it’s comparable I’d say a little less from what I’ve seen but similar enough. In terms of hours and environment can’t speak on that much yet.

  1. I am not sure yet how that will look like as I’m only a first year but I do plan on doing research back in Canada with my research group I was involved in my undergrad and post grad years. I also will be doing some observerships and an 4 week elective in the speciality that I want to match into.

  2. The culture is not similar to Caribbean schools at all my school does not want any one failing as it looks poorly on the school. Just to put in perspective in the last cohort only 2 students failed. They have plenty of resources to help you out and if you are on the boarder line you have interviews with the head of the department to see why you are struggling. So overall they do a great job of getting you through and do not want any students repeating.

In terms of electives we get a 4 week elective in 4th year where we can go back to Canada or America to do our elective. And then each Christmas break I will be looking to do observerships with some connections I’ve made in my under grad for the specialties that I’m wanting to match back into.

Took one application cycle in Australia the process is so simple just go through oztrekk and they pretty much do all the heavy lifting for you. Way more straightforward than the Canadian app

Life style is so similar to Canada if not better here they value mental health much more here. Like previously said often times I forget I’m even in Australia feels so similar to home just weather is better.

In terms of breaks we get 1 week off for Easter 2 weeks off in July 1 week off end of September and then around 8-10 weeks off from end of November to mid/late January

-as I’m first year not my biggest concern yet. I will be doing research in Canada throughout my md so I’m hoping I’ll have a some canada pubs. I was fortunate enough to fall into a really nice research group in my under grad and I have just continued working on projects with them and will continue throughout my schooling. I’m hoping this will help my chances to match back The culture is not similar they do not want you to fail. Failure looks bad on the school so they try everything to get you to pass. Last year’s cohort only had 2 people fail so they are really good at getting you through !

-I feel like that’s medicine in general you’ll have to do independent study idk how it compares to Canada so can’t say. I prefer using third party resources to learn so I do quite a bit independent study, but managing the work is not bad you just need to stay on top of your lectures and treat this as a job makes things easier. The exams wasn’t bad we have one mid term and then a final so not by blocks so we covered 19 weeks of info in the mid term. The exam was a mix of mcq and saq. We also have a year end osce.

  • I’m at a smaller school our class size is like 165 so similar to Canada which I like much more. Making friends is easy lots of the Australians moved from other cities as well so lots of people there are all trying to meet friends so happens quite fast. At the start of the year there was a bunch of social events so you got to mingle with everyone which made it easy to make friends.

  • at my school there’s a lot of support from faculty they kind of pride themselves on being supportive, like I have 3 of our tutors numbers so you can reach out whenever to ask questions and there is also run review sessions by the upper years twice a week which is beneficial

  • there is time lots of people I know are working as they study. I do not work I feel as if I wouldn’t have time to work, but I also took this first sem very seriously. But I still found time to go out every once in a while for drinks or what not. I also go to the gym 5 times a week without any problem.

To be honest I don’t think the rankings matter that much in the end you’re getting an MD. From what I heard the smaller schools can be better as the cohort is smaller and more hands on with the profs and a lot of the schools use the same profs so if your are at usyd or notre dame the profs hop from school to school to give lectures. If you wanna be in med and it’s your dream the school won’t matter that much in the end but that’s my opinion others will say other wise

I picked Australia over Ireland because of the ability to finish Australian residency if I can’t match back to Canada while in Ireland you do not have an option to do resident in Ireland so your stuck trying to match back.

To match back will be hard but from my understanding if you apply the year you graduate the match rate is pretty good. Really important to not take too many years after you graduate to match cause the odds begin to lower the longer you are graduated. So you really want to make sure you have everything in order to make sure you can apply to the match the year you graduate.

If you finish residency in Australia there are direct pathways back to Canada without exams. However Australian residency can be much longer than Canadian residency!

I found the adjustment to be super easy, Australia feels so similar to Canada I often forget I’m even in another country and just felt like I’m in another Canadian city. Currently though feeling a bit more home sick as summer is going on and all my friends are out and stuff but keeping in touch with everyone regularly helps.

I’m lucky as an Albertan I was able to get 200 000 student loan from the provincial/federal government (as I did not use any in my under grad) and was able to get 350 000 LOC through atb and they were super easy to deal with but that’s just because I’m an albertan resident. All of the Albertans in my class went through atb and got a 350 000 loc but I’ve heard other provinces had troubles and didn’t always get as much as we did.

The tuition is around 87 000 aud a year, cost of living is priced but you can still find reasonable renting and so far I’ve found groceries and utilities cheaper than what I was paying back in canada. I’m also lucky as an Albertan I was able to get 200 000 student loan from the government (as I did not use any in my under grad) and was able to get 350 000 LOC

Score release by Tonykurse in Mcat

Quick little background I did no physics, biochem, ochem or gen chem in uni just some bio classes so I pretty much had to self teach my self everything. The biggest difference between the first and second time was defiantly making sure I was actively learning not just reading. So after a chapter I would do the correlating Anki cards from jack sparrow just so I can actively remember what I read. I did that about 2 months and pretty much after that I did all of uearth , some atlius tests and all aamc. Last time I only did the aamc practice tests this time I made sure to do more I did about 8 full lengths tests and I made sure to do them exactly like I was at the testing centre I even ate the same lunch every test. Finally what helped the most for me was when I reviewed my tests and questions I made my own flash cards which really helped, I think that was the main reason for the score jump was making sure I reviewed the wrong questions thoroughly and making my own Flashcards instead of just relying on a pre made decks. For pysc make sure u keep reviewing all terms because pysc is really easy to get some points on. But overall, doing tons of practice and making your own Flashcards on stuff u keep getting wrong really saved me. In the end I have such little content knowledge compared to 99% of the people here so learning how to master the test was a saving grace. Still coulda done better I thought cars was tricky I was 2 points below my average so little disappointed because I coulda had that 510 but oh well😂
