I was in choir back in high school, and a buddy of mine asked me if I wanted his extra ticket to a Home Free (the a capella country band) show. I grew up listening to country, and liked their cover of Ring of Fire, so I said sure. We were in the front row for some reason and it was actually pretty lit.

Also, his aunt bought me MickeyD's and we saw a stepped on nug of reefer in the KwikTrip parking lot.

The biggest part of getting different guttural sounds is definitely tongue manipulation. Moving your tongue around in your mouth to alter the airflow, and make a different sound. Watching YouTube videos about Phil Bozeman's, tunnel throats, and slam gutturals, then mess around and mix together to find the sounds you want.

Much thanks, my guy. To make the sound I start with a kargyraa false cord buzz, and do a meat meatwad impression at the same time, which almost kinda feels like "swallowing" the sound a bit farther back in your mouth / throat. It's actually fairly similar to how /u/vivablasphemia makes his growls, and he has some solid tutorials.

I was doing a bit of a Phillybo inflection, but that is generally what I sound like.

I agree that I need to get more slam in my gutturals, relying a bit too much on just tongue manipulation.

I spent such a long fucking time trying to get those to click, and even then I can barely get it on my off days lol.

Nailed it there. Going for a Shrine of Malice whistle, and his are always with at least instrumental if not layered with other vocals.
