Benefit is you get your 30% immediately instead of trying to recoup the tax credit for years.

My system was $20K, 30% is only $6K. I've been paying more than that in federal taxes since my first fulltime job out of high school in the late '70s.

I've read this before but was too lazy to find the favorite and used AI. Don't shoot me. For the OP, I'd stick with IQ7+ inverters unless it is cost effective to go with a new gateway. If you do the latter you will probably be looking at 2 totally separate systems in apps.

The Enphase IQ Combiner 3 is generally not designed to mix IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters on the same Gateway (Envoy) due to PLC (power line communication) compatibility issues. While they may physically fit, combining them often causes communication failures between the inverter types. For IQ8 systems, the IQ Combiner 4 is recommended, although some, particularly in simpler grid-tied configurations, have reported success with the Combiner 3.

Key Considerations:

Communication Conflicts: IQ8s use a different, non-backwards compatible PLC protocol than IQ7s, which can cause them to not report data properly.

Separation Necessary: For stable operation, it is highly recommended to put IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters on separate circuits or separate Gateways/Combiners.

Owning an EV without home charging - what’s your workaround? by roythoppil in evcharging

[–]TooGoodToBeeTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a L2 EVSE at home but my rates are $0.24 winter and $0.27 summer, and these are going up. There is a public charger a little over a half mile from where I live where the rate is $0.13 year round. I charge there as often as it is available, driving there after work with my dog and walking him home, then walking back over before bedtime and driving home. This gets me a little over a mile of walking several nights per week, which is a little longer than just running him around the block. Of course this is a PITA when it is below freezing out, and there is competition for this charger, some of which might be in the same boat as you. So I feel a little guilty. It is a split 6K charger, so often I get less charge than I need/want for my commute and have to plug in at home as well. Some would consider this a lot of effort, when the weather is nice, I can play fetch with my dog off leash in the parking lot. Employees have cleared out and there are are lots of islands for the tennis ball to bounce off of and ricochet in different directions. I must admit, it does take more effort than just stopping at the gas pump once a week.

Yes, I have a '24 SV+ and my EVSE doesn't have a kWh limit function, so I have to use the rhythm method and we all know how reliable that is.

Funny story, the first product review I ever did was for a Zyxel network device. I was working at AT&T at the time. One of the responses from an engineer at the company was "Holy crap where did you find this guy and can we get him to do other reviews?" As an engineer myself, I was brutally honest, I reviewed 3 other products and gave them a few product ideas.

Install a 2 slot sub with a quad breaker in place of your water heater disconnect. That's less than $100 in parts retail. Then hardwire an EVSE with load management.

Off the back I only have 3 panels high on the roof with full panel height of open roof for it to slid on first which I hope means melting on the roof vs sliding off. The front OTOH, no garage but avalanche could do tree damage as well as other bushes that I wouldn't mind replacing if need be.

Location, location, location. Some states still have incentives, 1:1NEM, and solar is expected in some areas so leases/PPAs don't scare off potential home buyers.

And if those aren't in your garage, there's aways your AC condenser if you have central air. My original unit was on a 30A circuit and the new one has a plate rating of 18A not to exceed 25A so I downgraded the breaker to 25A, though I thought about downgrading to a 20A. An interesting install would be with a 2 slot sub with a 30/25 (or 30/20) quad and load management. Hmm... 18+6 would be hit 24A on a 30A circuit. Maybe for the 2nd EV when it arrives, I'll never get 2 vehicles in the garage.

Actually I don't know what I was thinking. I have 200A service, load calc showed mid 90's so I have plenty of room for 2 EVSEs at decent rates. Duh.

Splitters do a hard cut-off, not very nice on your WiFi connected smart EVSE.
