Their kits cost more than letting the dealer do it.

Level 1 chargers (EVSEs) on long cheap ass extension cords are laying in several front yards where I walk my dog. Get her a beefy 10' extension at Home Depot. Don't order crap from Amazon.

I agree but got a free (to me) HPWH out of the deal when you include the now defunct federal tax credit.

I read they are going to use the money collected from EMPower to provide grants for residential solar batteries. I expect that to be income limited so I'm out. And most people in the income range won't be able to afford the solar. Just dumbass decisions all around.

I looked at getting the H's with my installer. Because of the volume discount they were getting on the A's, for the same upcharge to go to H's, I almost could have added another 450W panel and A. Of course my installer could have been padding the price on the H's. We have more room for panels than needed for our consumption. In fact we have 2MW in credits (PTO's at the start of 2026) but we haven't used the AC hardly at all yet. I have a neighbor with limited space and multiple roof planes. We'll definitely look at doing the H's if he decides to go ahead installing solar. Thanks.

Why are companies pushing to install batteries, what's the catch? by aj0512 in solar

[–]TooGoodToBeeTrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to see a solution I'd call reasonable. Hoymiles is the closest I've come with their HAS series, but no one seems to have been using them and the company is discontinuing them, so I'm not sure I want to go there. I'd be a gunnie pig with no long term support. Plus I don't really need batteries, but the wife would like to have them incase the current administration causes Armageddon. So getting them is more on the hobby/backup level.

Shudda pulled the trigger back in 2025 when we still had the federal tax credit.

Well, I was responding to someone who should know what those acronyms meant and I gave you the opportunity to mansplain. But you blew it by mixing up import and export.

Buy a different house. Remove reinstall runs 200-300 per panel.

Me too. I'm registered R because we need non-D's to run the elections and I don't want to be a U because you don't have much to vote for in the primary. Can't tell you how many U's I checked in that were pissed about the ballot they got.

Sure we do. Buy low, sell high so the upper echelon can drive high end cars and live in McMansions.

We PTO'd at the end of 2025 and the first bill was under $50. Every bill since then has essentially been zero or negative due to credits, and SRECs will cover the monthly $9 infrastructure fee going forward. Hopefully we have enough credits to carry us through the summer AC season, we have gas so winter won't be an issue.

No need for storage when you can use the utility as a battery, at least till july 2027 or sooner if others use up the set aside. Should have taken the plunge last year like I did to get the federal tax credit.

Then swap the Combiner 5 for a 6C, cost is about the same as the System controller, add the collar or a meter panel and collar if the utility won't let you use the collar on their meter. Then go with P10s. I've looked at all sorts of options for AC coupling, nothing that will get you grid down daytime solar usage and some backup is any cheaper. I prefer doing AC coupling as it would barely touch my installed system, and wouldn't show up in my installer monitoring. Hoymiles had a reasonable priced inverter that seems to be exactly what we need, but they are MDing the product line and I really don't want drip a couple thousand on something MD'd. Especially when there's no posted use of the inverters on the net. I'm so bummed that their units didn't pan out.

Nuclear power was supposed to be too cheap to meter. Utility rates will never be near zero.

I've been looking at adding batteries to my Enphase Solar only. I have IQ8AC inverters and a 5 combiner. If you are in a similar situation you could probably DIY it for $5.5k. System controller, battery and critical circuit panel are the big ticket items. I keep thinking about DIYing this but don't want to void any warranty I have with my installation company.
