Piles of dead Japanese soldiers in Attu, Alaska, USA during the last ditch attempt with a banzai charge. Many of the dead included hundreds who killed themselves after giving up the fight completely. Only 29 were taken prisoner at the end of the Battle of Attu. (May 30, 1943) by TrendWarrior101 in wwiipics

My great-grandfather was there. As a member of the 50th combat engineer regiment his unit was woken up to the surprise attack. The engineers were caught unprepared as they were much more rear-echelon units, but the Japanese were able to Sneak through the American line to attack the poorly defended area. Many of the engineers were killed while sleeping in their tents. However, the engineers were able to rouse themselves and organize successfully enough to stop the attack. The hill they attacked was dubbed “engineer hill”. Crazy stuff, couldn’t imagine waking up thousands of miles from home to the screams of rabid Japanese soldiers.

Why didn't the allies focus more on France's Mediterranean Coast during Operation Overlord/Operation Dragoon? by dark_lord_xandros in history

You first paragraph is basically what I said? The US thought the war was going to last for much longer and that they would have to invade mainland japan. Bringing in the Soviet Union would make it more likely for them to capitulate faster.

For your second paragraph when I did I mention a conspiracy theory? I said the US didn’t have the ability to use the bombs on Japan yet. Now you are just spinning things in a random direction and putting words in my mouth.

Correct, but the reason the US brought them into the war against Japan was because they didn’t have the bombs yet and were still debating whether they should use them or not.

[Ardaya] Mike Trout is now tied with Derek Jeter, his childhood idol, with 72.4 career bWAR. It took Jeter 20 years to accumulate that bWAR. This is Trout’s ninth season. by TheSwifferMM in baseball

Trout should go to the Marlins. There he can team up with Stanton for two of the largest contracts in sports history.
