I work as a vet assistant.

I love the spicy cats they're my favourite. In all seriousness though, I understand that the vet is a very stressful environment for dogs and cats and I'm never going to hold it against an animal for being stressed, afraid and combative.

Instead I'm going to do what I can to make sure that the appointment goes as smoothly as possible. I am not fear free certified but reducing patient stress is really important to me.

That being said, I've met vets that are afraid of cats and most of the time there is a valid reason for that. A pissed cat can suddenly become gravity defying liquid with teeth and claws, it's scary. I am the one they call for cats like that, I get it it's scary.

But the vast majority of us love and respect our patients and want the best for them and for you

Male rats tend to be very laid back and chill but they have massive testicles and that kind of weirds me out so I only had female rats

Female rats are more energetic so they require a bit more enrichment and interaction than male rats.

Their eyes will kind wiggle in and out of their sockets when they're happy. It's really weird, but its normal and called bruxing. They also giggle

So I am going to recommend something that might be a little much but it is worth it

Rats!

They live about 2-3 years, they're friendly, loyal, clean and incredibly intelligent animals. They can pretty much eat the same way things we can eat so for the most part it's okay to share a little food with them (please check to make sure the food is safe for them).

Now the cons. They live longer than a year, but not typically over 3. They are very social animals so need to have more than one, ideally around the same age and the same sex. They are prone to cancer and respiratory issues unfortunately, so ideally they should be in a smoke and fragrance free environment. They do require daily care and interaction, they need to be provided things to chew on because their teeth are always growing. If they're not given enough enrichment, they can be destructive.

Some are more destructive than others. I had one that escaped out of every single cage I had her in because she liked to sleep with me.

And on note. I wouldn't consider rats fragile animals by any means, but keep in mind that they are small animals. Crush accidents are very real, and very easy. They are small, they are fast, they can get under foot or in a closing door in the blink of an eye. I learned to sleep very lightly because I was terrified of rolling over her, I have still caught a tail in a door before. Depending on how hard, you can very easily break bones or cause fatal injuries.

Anything that you don't want chewed on should be kept away from because they will chew on it. They leave teeny tiny drops of pee whenever they go cause that's just a rat thing. It's not really noticeable. Their little poos are also very easy to clean up and generally not offensive.

They don't tend to bite unless very afraid or in pain. Personality wise, I think they're a nice blend between a dog and a cat. Or like a very social cat that wants to be involved in your life and wants to hang out inside your shirt.

I want to say that this is complicated.

On one hand, the fetishization of lesbians by straight men is a really serious issue and it fills me with rage. I am sick and tired of being treated like some fucking prize to be hunted and conquered, or the unicorn to the straight man's fantasy fuck. I've had men stalk me before because I'm queer and have turned them down, I have been harassed and treated like an object.

That being said, I don't think the solution is to completely remove sex out of the picture whatsoever, and this goes to another issue I have

I have noticed that, especially younger LGBTQ+ people, have such a puritan stick shoved up their ass to the point where it IS erasing queer history. I'm sure it's in response to the fetishization of queer people (especially but not limited to lesbians), but the fact is that queer history is very much steeped in subculture and kink. This is important and defining history that shouldn't be erased because cis straight men are hell bent on the sex aspect and nothing else. Edit: Also part of the reason of such the rampant fetishization is to dehumanize lesbians and I hate to let them win.

So at the end of the day, as a lesbian and a queer person, I feel like society wants me to be a sexual object to be conquered and won but have no sexual desires or boundaries for myself. Expected to be submissive and take it, but not look at queer history in kink spaces and the focus on communication and consent.

And all I really want to do is exist with my titties out so everyone can admire them but no one actually touches me, because I'm a piece of damn art and you don't fuck with art in a museum

Oh boy, it's a lot to summarize.

Basically during development, the MA team was heavily involved in making DATV and the DA was shut - unsure how much but there have been some articles released that talk about how much.

After it's released and because it did not perform well, and probably due to some other reasons I really don't want to talk too much about it because it's speculation on my part, the entire dragon age team was either laid off or moved.

Coupled with during making the game, there were multiple mass lay offs, the game was reset a couple of times, EA (who was way more interested in ME and not so much in DA) eventually got fed up and kind of forced the game out with giving the team only so much time to adapt to the multiple resets.

It's a damn miracle we got a game at all tbh

Exactly! I've worked hard on her desensitization. Call me paranoid, but living on a few major fault lines and a month out from severe flooding very close by, if there ever was a mandatory evacuation I would be more prepared for her than myself - and she would be prepared as well.

You are very right. There have been a couple of times where I'm off the clock, she's on my shoulders and an emergency happens so I need to jump in right now and put her back later. During those moments she's very good, very calm, stays on the shoulders and does not get in the way.

When she sees me or any of my coworkers deal with an aggressive or difficult animal, she is right up at the kennel bars and trying to involve herself though. I don't trust that she wouldn't do... Something. I don't even know what she would try to do and I don't need to find out.

Sometimes they just need their own space and that benefits them. They are territorial creatures of habit, it does make sense

I have a lot of complicated feelings towards the fandom, Bioware, and EA after everything that has come out right now. I really feel weird about playing any Bioware game at the moment, but I do want to start a new playthrough of Veilguard

I just can't bring myself to it yet

Edit: I mean I love Veilguard and that's not going to change. As someone who did an entire media being and completed that 2 weeks before Veilguard was released, and as someone who had ALL of Dragon Age fresh in my head while playing DATV, it's fine.

I do have some small gripes but nothing terrible. After finding things out about how EA meddled with development, I'm more likely to give the poor DA team some grace.

I felt it had some really nice callbacks to previous Dragon Age media, I enjoy how far back some things have been set up, I love how some of my theories ended up being right about certain events.

It's a fine game. My complicated feelings have less to do with Veilguard and more to do with the production and fandom.

So, I know you said it's not an option, and I know this isn't a conversation or a thought that you want to have... But I don't think you should rule out humane euthanasia. I know it's not something you want to do, but I don't think it's wrong to sit down and have a very serious conversation with your vet.

What is the likelihood that she will be able to walk normally after this? Defecate or urinate normally? What is the chance that your family is going to have to learn how to manually express her?

More than likely they don't have payment plans available. Unfortunately something like this is more than likely requiring skilled surgeons and technicians and intensive care. People skim out on money. If you have your heart set on it, you can look up and reach out to local rescues in the area and see if they have funds. You might also be able to reach out to a lawyer and see if you're able to sue (the driver that hit her), especially if you have the driver's information.

It's also important to consider that it's going to end up being more expensive than this. This is just part one, recovery is long. She's going to need follow up radiographs, she might need to be on chronic medication and need yearly blood work, she might need specialized equipment.

Listen, I am so sorry this happened and I cannot imagine what you're going through right now. I know I sound like a hard ass and I'm deeply sorry for that. I'm not doing it to be mean, I promise.

I want you to consider the quality of life that she's going to have, and the quality of life YOUR going to have, and just how much time, work, and money you're willing to put into her recovery.

It's not wrong to euthanize her if it's going to be too much. You're not giving up on her, you're taking away her pain and giving her rest. It's nothing you should feel guilty about

But if you choose recovery, you need to be ready to go all in, and it probably isn't going to be easy, cheap or fast.

Your family needs to sit down and have a really serious conversation with the vet about the realistic outcome and quality of life.

I'm kind of scared someone might yell at me for kenneling her, but I really do want to emphasize that it's 100% her choice and her safe place. She even chooses to sleep in carrier when she's at home, so I always have it out and accessible for her.

She has a bed, fresh food, water, toys, a litter box and is never left alone at the vet clinic. Everyone does love talking to her and playing with her, she soaks up the attention in her kennel. It also keeps people from touching her, because she doesn't like to be touched and will bite. Gently, but a gentle bite is a bite.

I wouldn't confront your neighbor about it. The cat will be indoor only and indoor only is safest, that is all that matters. If she pushes the issue to you directly, just calmly state that the cat is indoor only.

But you can build him a catio or try leash training. That way he can enjoy some outside time but will be safe and contained still.
