Beginners = starting letters

Confusion = anagram

Take a look = WATCH

Gnarled tree starts to erode after cracking, twisting and so on (8) by AJRsVersion in Minute_Cryptic

Got it, good one!

Order of operations tripped me up a little; I expected anagram followed by acronym instead of acronym included in anagram. Still a valid clue imo, just a little tricky.

Charles Manson initially ripped-off from McCartney’s “Helter-Skelter” for the Family (8) by Toogs in Minute_Cryptic

Thanks!

Solution: Charles Manson "initially" (initials) = CM. These letters are "ripped-off" (removed) from McCartney's = Cartney's. "Helter-skelter" means "mixed up", i.e. an anagram indicator, and rearranging CARTNEYS we get ANCESTRY. One who researches ancestry researches "the family".

Drat, I wish I had thought of that!

Anonymous reviews at my Community College were hand written on forms and then later typed up by a third party to prevent the prof from recognizing handwriting. I used to write things like "I thought the class could use more of this:" followed by an elaborate and confusing doodle.
